El Reno freshmen down Kingfisher in ’24 opener

El Reno High School’s freshman football team opened up the 2024 season with a 48-12 victory over Kingfisher.

Quarterback Donovan Mahsheet threw for one touchdown to Kobe Little. It was one of four scores for Little in the 36-point blowout, rushing for three other scores.

Grant First scored three times on the ground and carried in a pair of 2-point conversions.

Brent Parker had one conversion.

El Reno’s defense was led by Cooper Coble with 14 tackles.

Union City takes bedlam, Chieftains win shootout

Bragging rights in fast-pitch softball between Calumet and Union City high schools will stay with the Tigers for another season after UCHS defeated the Chieftains last week 10-2.

It was the only non-tournament meeting between the two Canadian County small schools.

The victory was part of a four-game win streak for Union City, which also defeated Anadarko 2-1 to sweep that series.

The win over the Warriors came in eight innings as Union City scored Morgan Brothers on the international tiebreaker following a fly out by Jaidyn Grandstaff.

Calumet extends streak, UCHS rebounds

Sweeping three ranked teams in Class 2A, Calumet High School’s baseball team earned its third tournament or festival title of the fall season amid an 11-game win streak.

The top-ranked team in Class B moved to 12-1 on the season after beating No.7 Latta (9-2), No.5 Byng (4-3) and No.6 Tushka (9-1) to win the Roff Invitational. 

Calumet then defeated Oktaha 7-4 on a neutral site at Seminole State College.

The Chieftains hold the No.1 spot in the polls for a second straight week and garnered 36 of the 43 first-place votes cast.

Cougars score, still searching for early win

Body

Redlands Community College women’s soccer team opened up the 2024 season on the road with a 13-2 loss to Kansas-based Garden City and a scoreless tie with Dallas College of North Lake.

The Cougars dropped a 3-2 decision closer to home against Mid-America University’s junior varsity squad.

In that loss, Ashinti Lewis scored both goals and has logged three on the season. Lewis leads the team in shots with eight and four on-goal attempts. Billie Orth had two shots and a goal against Garden City. Gaby Figueroa (2) and Payton Brickey (1) had scoring chances in the losses.

Trio file for Ward 1 El Reno Council seat

A three-person race has developed for the Ward 1 El Reno City Council seat. 

Incumbent Amy Neathery will be challenged by Aaron J. Hines and Phillip Church in the Nov. 5 election. The person with the most votes will earn the right to represent Ward 1 during a four-year term. 

Canadian County Election Board information said Hines, who will turn 29 in October, filed Monday morning at 9:02. Neathery followed, filing her official candidacy at 9:49 a.m. Church filed on Wednesday just prior to the 4:30 p.m. deadline.

Judge Barbara Hatfield’s retirement reception was hosted by Canadian County judges, bailiffs and court reporters. 

District Judge Paul Hesse welcomed Judge Hatfield’s family, friends and clergy and all others in attendance including Canadian County’s retired judges, elected officials and staff, judges from other counties and attorneys who met at the courthouse to thank Judge Hatfield for her 13 years of service as Special Judge and wish her a happy retirement.

Meeting eyes city’s fitness, transportation needs

Transportation and fitness were the focus of a special meeting held by the El Reno City Council last week. 

The council met at noon Aug. 28 to approve resolutions that are expected to lead to new sidewalks on SW 27th Street, as well as major changes to the Elm and South Country Club intersection.

Also, council agreed to move a fitness court the city is partnering with the Cheyenne and Arapaho on a bit further to the west in Adams Park. 

County fair attendance numbers on par despite heat

The 70th Annual Canadian County Free Fair attracted 496 exhibitors with an estimated attendance of 14,500. “That ‘70s Show” was the theme of the 2024 fair, which ran Aug. 21-24 at the Canadian County Expo and Event Center, 3001 Jensen Road East.

Fair attendance - which is based on carnival ticket sales - was “very similar to last year,” Canadian County Fair Board Secretary Brad Tipton said.

“It’s the heat on Saturday afternoon that keeps the numbers down,” Tipton said.
