Sheriff’s office warning of new phone scam

The Canadian County Sheriff’s Office is aware of multiple scam attempts on county citizens in which the scammers pretend to be Sheriff Chris West or other deputies.

“The scammers tactics are to impersonate law enforcement to gain money from victims by scaring them with threats of arrest warrants or missed court dates,” said Maj. Adam Flowers.

“These scammers will ask for money through cash payments using Internet apps or purchasing gift cards.”

Consultant picked to update hazard mitigation plan

A consultant has been selected to update Canadian County’s hazard mitigation plan.

The Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 requires Canadian County to update its plan every five years to remain eligible for hazard mitigation grants through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Commissioners awarded a low bid contract to L.E. Marshall Consulting LLC at their weekly meeting.

The cost will be $55,374 for the Yukon company to complete the task.

Nexus seeks help in mini horse rescue

El Reno’s Nexus Equine has provided shelter and food for miniature horses in need of care and support.

Rita Hoch, founder and CEO of the horse and animal rescue, said, “This is not a cruelty case, rather, it’s a story of compassion. The previous owner deeply loved her animals but reached a point where she needed help. Nexus Equine responded without hesitation, ensuring these minis received the care they deserve.”

While Hoch said NEXUS is grateful to help, the number of miniature horses is a formidable task.

NOBLE – While producing no points, a pair of time-draining possessions in the second half by Noble proved to be the biggest hurdle for El Reno High School’s football team in a narrow 14-13 loss to the Bears.

The one-point setback dropped El Reno to 3-6 on the season and dealt a knockout blow to EHS’ playoff hopes. The Indians are currently tied for fifth in the District 5A-2 standings with Lawton at 2-4.

Redlands shut out by Bucks

Despite logging a double-digit shot total, Redlands Community College women’s soccer team suffered a 3-0 shutout loss to the University of Arkansas Rich Mountain.

The setback came in the opening round of the 2025 NJCAA Region 2 Championships. It was the first trip to the postseason for the Cougars since 2018 as Redlands season comes to an end with a 7-8-1 overall record.

Redlands was outshot 14-10 by the Bucks as RCC was unable to get an attempt on frame.

Charges filed in Duran death

Formal criminal charges have been filed by the Canadian County District Attorney’s Office in the death of Sgt. Thomas A. Duran as a result of being hit by a motor vehicle on Oct. 17.

El Reno Police Chief Ken Brown issued the statement announcing the charges on Friday morning.

Sgt. Duran, 41, a 14-year veteran of the El Reno Police Department, was hit by a vehicle around 2 a.m. Oct. 17. Duran was outside his vehicle after he had stopped to assist a pedestrian who had reportedly waved him over. He died a week later in an Oklahoma City hospital.
