El Reno matmen claw out win over Wildcats

Effort was the key word according to head coach Tyrone Lewis as El Reno High School’s wrestling team rallied from early-round deficits to defeat cross-county rival Piedmont 53-18.

El Reno, which moved up from sixth to third in the latest Class 5A poll, is now 3-0 on the dual season with a third straight win over the Wildcats, ranked No.13 in Class 6A.

The Indians trailed after the first period in three of the first four weights, but rallied to win two of those matches to set an early duel lead which it never relinquished.

Final period blitz holds off Irish

Using a 14-8 scoring edge in the fourth period, El Reno High School’s girls basketball team remains undefeated on the season with a 47-38 road win over Bishop McGuinness.

El Reno is now 3-0 on the season and extended its current win streak over the Irish to three games with the nine-point decision.

The Indians trailed by one after the first period but regained the lead via a 19-7 run in the second period for a 30-19 halftime cushion.

The Irish made it close with an 11-3 break in the third to close the gap to 33-30 after three frames.

Arc shooting lifts Indians to victory

El Reno High School’s boys basketball team extended its current win streak to three games after riding a recent hot streak in 3-point shooting to a 60-53 road victory over Bishop McGuinness.

The Indians are now 3-0 on the season and 2-1 against the Irish since the series was renewed in 2021.

Both meetings last season were overtime affairs, with El Reno winning in February by five points.

Last week’s win was sparked by outside shooting as El Reno went 8-of-17 for 47 percent.

Pritchett trey propels Chieftains to win; Warriors, Tigers follow suit

Mattie Pritchett hit a deep 3-pointer with 3.3 seconds left as Calumet High School’s girls basketball team won its second straight game with a 41-40 decision over Hinton.

Calumet improved to 4-3 on the year heading into the Canton Invitational.

The trey gave Pritchett a team-high 12 points in the win to go along with two rebounds and a steal. Allie Harris followed with 10 points, six rebounds, four steals and four assists.

Calumet, Okarche and Union City extend win streaks

Keeping up the pressure to crack the top five in the Class B poll, Calumet High School’s boys basketball team won its fourth straight game with a 75-56 decision over Hinton.

The Chieftains, ranked sixth in the state, improved to 6-1 on the year heading into the Canton Invitational.

Hunter Arnold scored a team-high 23 points for Calumet and added two assists and a steal. Dalton Belcher had a double-double with 16 points, 12 boards, five steals and five assists.
