Tis the season of giving

Body

On Thursday, El Reno High School students delivered presents to hospitalized veterans as part of the Gifts to the Yanks program.

Beginning in 1945, this program was created during World War II to provide Christmas gifts and entertainment to hospitalized veterans.

Schools from all around the nation participated in this program, but to our knowledge, EHS is the only school that continues doing so.

Money is raised by student clubs and first-hour classes. Gifts are then purchased, wrapped and delivered to hospitalized veterans.

The small El Reno school that reopened in the 1990s after closing in the 1960s has 112 students, said longtime Principal Shannon Statton. This year, 33 of those students are receiving tuition assistance through the Tax Credit Scholarship Program.
