Thomas F. (Red) Coffey

Body

Thomas F. Coffey passed away peacefully at his home with family by his side on Jan. 15, 2023.

Tom was born Sept. 30, 1932, in the midst of the Great Depression, to John W. and Katherine Reherman Coffey on the Coffey homestead eight miles west of Okarche. He was the second oldest of their six children.

Tom, known as “Red” by his friends, started working on the farm at an early age, and when not working, attended a local one-room schoolhouse and later grade school and high school at Holy Trinity Catholic School in Okarche.

Redlands releases honor rolls for fall 2022 semester

Body

Redlands Community College recently announced students named to the college’s honor rolls for the fall 2022 semester.

Students listed on the President’s Honor Roll have completed 12 or more credit hours and have earned a GPA of not less than 3.8, with no grade less than a B – excluding 0-level courses.

The Vice President’s Honor Roll features students who have completed 12 or more hours of coursework and have earned a GPA of 3.5 to 3.79, with no grade less than a C – excluding 0-level courses.

Deadline for absentee ballot requests set for Jan. 30

Body

The deadline to request absentee ballots by mail is approaching. Applications must be received by the Canadian County Election Board no later than 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30.

Allen Arnold, county election board acting secretary, says absentee voting is available to all voters and can be submitted several ways.

“In Oklahoma, no excuse is needed to vote by absentee ballot and it’s easy to apply. Voters can submit their application online, in-person, by fax, mail or even email.”

Bina Janice Chapman

Body

Bina Janice Chapman was born in Okarche on March 8, 1932, to Homer and Flossie (Slusher) Faler.

She died at home in El Reno on Jan. 10, 2023.

Janice was a seamstress and attended Wesley United Methodist Church.

She was a member of the Oklahoma Bass Association of the Deaf and the Oklahoma City Senior Citizens Association of the Deaf.

In 1952, she married Billy Earn Chapman. He preceded her in death on Jan. 27, 2021.

Her parents and an infant son also preceded her in death.

Jerry Allen Darter

Body

Memorial services for Jerry Allen Darter of Oklahoma City will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2023, at Yukon First United Methodist Church.

Jerry died Jan. 13, 2023, at the age of 90. 

Jerry was a faithful servant as a Methodist minister to several churches across Oklahoma, including El Reno Wesley.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Mark Daniel Darter.

After having a two-year run at the Class 5A Dual State Championships halted on its home mat last year at the hands of Elgin, El Reno High School’s wrestling team returned the favor.

The top-ranked Indians traveled down the H.E. Bailey Turnpike to secure the District 3 Championships with a 3-0 record following a 43-33 win over the second-ranked Owls.

The win lifted El Reno to 8-2 on the season and punched its ticket to dual state, set for Feb. 10-11 in Enid.

The Indians have won 11 dual state titles, the last coming in 2007.

Elgin edges out Indians to win Malcolm Wade Invitational team crown

Body

Two days after beating Elgin to win the Class 5A, District 3 title and clinching a spot at dual state, El Reno High School’s wrestling team lost a close battle with the Owls at the 57th Annual Malcolm Wade Invitational.

The event, hosted by Carl Albert, featured 22 teams, with Elgin taking the team title with 223 points. El Reno was second with 218 points and Lawton MacArthur third with 215.5 points. Carl Albert (205) and Duncan (155) rounded out the top five.
