Paint play, transition scoring fuels EHS girls to 57-45 victory

With both the interior and transition offense working smoothly, El Reno High School’s girls basketball team remain in the Suburban Conference title talk with a 57-45 win over No.15 Guthrie.

El Reno, ranked fourth in the same Class 5A poll, moved to 9-3 on the year with the 12-point win over the Bluejays. The Indians are 3-1 in the league standings and in second place behind Piedmont.

Alex Elizondo’s 3-pointer at the buzzer sailed long as El Reno High School’s boys basketball team dropped its second straight Suburban Conference game 67-64 to No.14 Guthrie.

El Reno, now 9-3 on the season, slipped three spots to No.7 in the same Class 5A poll heading into the Shawnee Invitational.

The Indians are now 2-2 in the league standings.

Funeral services for Bobby Glen Hart of El Reno will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, 2023, at First Baptist Church in Walters, with burial in the Walters Cemetery. Services are under the direction Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home, Walters.

Bobby departed this life on Jan. 15, 2023, in Temple, Okla. He was born Jan. 22, 1937, west of Walters to Clay and Ida V. (Martin) Hart. He was the oldest of their five children.

John Townsend Jr.

Funeral services for John Edward Townsend Jr. will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Concho Emergency Response Center with Rev. Gerald Panana officiating. Burial will follow at the Concho Cemetery under the direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home.

John died Jan. 17, 2023, at St. Anthony Hospital – Midtown in Oklahoma City.

He was born June 19, 1970, in Oklahoma City. He was currently living in Asher and was a truck driver.

Marcella Dalton

A celebration of life for Marcella Dalton, 78, of El Reno will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 23 in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel.

Urn burial will follow at the El Reno Cemetery.

Jimmy Bass

Funeral services for Jimmy Lynn Bass were held Jan. 17 at First Baptist Church in Minco, with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Huber-Reynolds Funeral Home.

Jimmy passed away Jan. 6, 2023, in Omaha, Neb. He was born July 3, 1977, in Weatherford and grew up west of Minco, graduating with the Minco class of 1996.

He was employed several years as an electrician with the Oklahoma Electrical Supply Company before forming Bass Electric Company out of Minco. He had served as president of the Minco Little League and the Minco Ag Boosters.

Okarche avenges earlier loss; Calumet, UCHS win

Hunter Mueggenborg hit three of four late free-throw attempts and Easton Roby added one free throw as Okarche High School’s boys basketball team avenged one of its earlier losses with a 63-60 home win over Hennessey. The Warriors, ranked sixth in Class A, improved to 15-2 on the season.

Okarche was coming off a 90-41 win over Thomas/Fay-Custer and battled through more than a dozen ties and lead changes in the first half with Hennessey before outscoring the Eagles 30-27 over the final two periods.

Tigers edge out Geary in four OTs; Warriors roll

It took four overtimes before Union City High School’s girls basketball team defeated Geary 71-69 in Washita Valley Conference action to improve to 9-7 on the season.

The Tigers, now 2-4 in the WVC standings, were coming off a 58-39 non-conference loss to Burns Flatt-Dill City.

In that loss, Bree Goad scored a team-high 12 points, followed by Emily Griggs with 11. Mackinzie DeLong scored five points, while Megan Goad and Oceanna Schranz added four points each.

Picking the right builder

Four Canadian County officers have been appointed to decide which architects to interview to prepare plans and cost estimates for a new county courthouse complex. County commissioners would then hire a firm to develop the design of a multi-level courthouse/administration building in the county seat.

Estimated construction costs have not been determined.

Tillman jail agrees to start housing Canadian County inmates

Body

The Canadian County Sheriff’s Office may now take inmates from here to the Tillman County Jail in Frederick. The two jails are about 138 miles apart.

A new agreement allows Canadian County to use bed space at the Tillman County Jail at a cost of $45 per day, per inmate.

Canadian County houses inmates in other jails when the local jail is full. The jail at 304 E. Evans has a 194-bed capacity.
