Calumet and Union City high schools fast-pitch softball teams were on the opposite ends of win streaks last week as the pair charge into the latter part of the 2024 season.

The surging Chieftains had a four-game win streak snapped by Verden by a 13-3 score. The Chieftains were coming off blowout wins over Geary (18-0), Crooked Oak (13-1) and Ninnekah (21-3).

The loss left Calumet with a 9-13 overall record.

Calumet went 26-of-68 (.382) from the plate over the four games, getting a home run from Lila Winegeart and triples by Emma Krapcha, Winegeart and Peyton Watson.

UNION CITY – Bragging rights on the baseball diamond in the rivalry between Union City and Calumet high schools will rest with the top-ranked Chieftains for another fall campaign.

Calumet, ranked No.1 in Class B for a third straight week, rebounded from a loss to Class 2A’s second-ranked Dale (9-1) to defeat the Tigers 11-1 for a second straight fall season.

The Chieftains added a 9-1 victory over Sentinel, ranked fourth in Class B, to improve to 15-2 on the fall. Calumet earned 43 of the 51 first-place votes in the latest poll.

Redlands Community College women’s soccer team, battling a rash of early-season injuries, is still seeking its first win after dropping two one-goal decisions to open NJCAA Region 2 action.

The Cougars slipped to 0-4-1 with back-to-back home setbacks to Eastern Oklahoma State College (3-2) and Northern Oklahoma College of Enid (1-0).

In the loss to Eastern, Redlands got an unassisted goal each from Ashanti Lewis and Gaby Figueroa. Lewis paced the team in shots with five, while Figueroa had two shots.

Miya Ingram and Elizabeth Bolton added a shot each.

For two teams that live and die with the running game, both El Reno and Piedmont high schools got their “three yards” during last week’s Canadian County bedlam game.

However, it was the Wildcats with more “clouds of dust” as Piedmont defeated El Reno 27-14 for its fourth straight win in the rivalry.

“This group of players has never beaten Piedmont and I think it’s gotten into their heads a little bit,” said El Reno head coach Russell Cook.

A three-game win streak, the second longest of the season, has pulled El Reno High School’s fast-pitch softball team into sole possession of fourth place in the District 5A-2 standings.

Now 8-5 on the year, El Reno is knocking on the door for third place in the league after beating Del City (13-2) and sweeping a set from Santa Fe South by scores of 17-6 and 10-0.

The home victory over the Eagles came after El Reno scored 13 unanswered runs. The Indians are now 4-3 inside the Ashbrook North Complex for the season.

Allowing just 35 points over three games, El Reno High School’s volleyball team earned its first victory in Suburban Conference action with a 3-0 decision over Elgin.

The 25-6/25-13/25-16 win moved El Reno to 9-9 on the season and 1-2 in the Suburban Conference standings.

The Indians are tied with the Owls for fourth in the league.

El Reno hosts cross-county rival Piedmont Friday night at Memorial Stadium.
 

Runs were few and far between as El Reno High School’s fast-pitch softball team got into a pitching duel with Putnam City North last week in a non-district home game.

The loss to the Class 6A team dropped El Reno to 5-5 on the season, while the Panthers snapped a seven-game losing streak with the win over the Indians.

Kaydence Pawnee took the loss from the circle for El Reno, throwing seven innings with a line of three runs (two earned) off seven hits and three walks, while striking out two batters.

Building off the success he had in middle school, El Reno High School freshman Ethan Brooks took third place in the Elite Boys Division at the 2024 Carl Albert Titans Invitational.

Brooks ran the 3.1-mile course (5 kilometers) in 16 minutes, 28.30 seconds, finishing just under 12 seconds faster than Tulsa Regent Prep’s Clay McKinney. His time was the fastest among runners from schools not fielding a full team. 

Brooks was 40.28 seconds off the winning pace set by Stillwater’s Mez Barth (15:47) and 30.7 seconds behind Moore’s Dominic Mathias (15:57).

Pulling out a dramatic two-point victory in the fifth and deciding game, El Reno High School’s volleyball team avenged an earlier loss to Chickasha in the U.S. 81 rivalry series.

El Reno won 3-2 over the Chicks by scores of 20-25/25-22/25-20/21-25/18-16 to move to 9-9 on the season.

The win came on the heels of a 3-0 Suburban Conference loss to Carl Albert. That loss dropped EHS to 0-2 in the league standings.
