On paper, it’s the youngest rivalry for El Reno High School football.

On the field, though, there is no question that the series with Piedmont has become one of the program’s biggest and sometimes heated rivalries.

The two face off Friday at Memorial Stadium with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

“There is no love lost between El Reno and Piedmont. It’s a good game and our kids look forward to playing this team every year,” said El Reno head coach Russell Cook.

So what makes it such a big rivalry? Is it the short distance between schools (24.4 miles?)

The win marked the second straight year for El Reno to kick off a new season with a victory and moved the Indians overall lead in the series with Chickasha to 40-36 in the 76 meetings since 1944.

As his team shook hands with players from sixth-ranked Asher following Union City High School’s 5-4 win in the third-place game of the Varnum Invitational, head coach Ludy Griggs had an epiphany.

“We won the game on a pop-up to the catcher. After the game was over and we were in line shaking hands, I look over and saw the ball sitting on the field and it was then I realized that was my 700th win,” said Griggs.

So what did the veteran coach do after that aha moment?
