Multiple scorers spearhead EHS girls to victory in SC rivalry

PIEDMONT – Seven different players scored for El Reno High School’s girls basketball team in a cross-county rivalry game with Piedmont as the Indians closed the 2021 portion of their schedule with a 55-30 victory.

The Wildcats, holding the seventh spot in the Class 5A poll, were the sixth straight ranked team for El Reno to play this season. The Indians, ranked third in the same 5A poll, improved to 5-1 overall.

Fast start lifts Indians to win over Piedmont

PIEDMONT – Quick starts have been key for El Reno High School’s boys basketball team and the Indians did it again in the first of two rivalry meetings with Piedmont.

The Indians used a 22-10 break in the first period and then held off a second-half charge by the Wildcats for a 61-52 victory.

With its third win in a row, El Reno, ranked 12th in Class 5A, improved to 4-2 on the season.

Stampede into Missouri

El Reno High School’s wrestling team was one of several ranked Oklahoma programs to take part in the 2021 Kansas City Stampede held in Missouri over the weekend.

Niko Gonzalez, Dailey Jennings and Rylee Walborn, shown here in a recent dual with Blanchard, were among the 11 grapplers the Indians took to the national tourney.

Union City, Okarche girls secure double-digit wins

Pushing three players in double-digit scoring, Union City High School’s girls basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 65-40 win over Gracemont.

The game was a makeup from an earlier date which was postponed due to COVID-19 complications. The Tigers improved to 5-6 on the season but more importantly, earned their first Washita Valley Conference win in five attempts.

Thirteen players got into the scoring act for Union City High School’s boys basketball team as the Tigers jumped back into the win column with a 65-42 road decision over Gracemont.

The victory moved Union City to 6-5 on the season and 2-3 in the Washita Valley Conference standings.

J.D. Riley scored a team-high 11 points, highlighted by a trio of 3-point baskets. Colson Combs and Tyler Norton paced those shooters in single digits with seven points each. Blake Ross, Ruston Dawson and Cody Woods chipped in six points each.

It’s been said there is life after football and Chuck Atchison has decided he wants to try and see if that old saying is really true - while he still can.

In a move which stunned some, the El Reno High School football coach of five years resigned his current position last week to become the district’s new Director of Operations.

Winning four of the final five weights, El Reno High School’s wrestling team remains undefeated at home this season with a 39-33 win over Class 4A’s fourth-ranked Blanchard.

The dual was the fourth this season for El Reno against ranked opponents, three of those being top five schools.

The Indians, the No.2 team in the latest Class 5A poll, improved to 3-2 on the year.

“It was a hard fight and we just had to keep going and get better from here on out. We finished with a close one but we got the win,” said 195-pounder Xzavier Devereaux.

Calumet girls snap slide; Okarche earns 11th win

Double-digit scoring in all four quarters, including a 29-point second period, allowed Calumet High School’s girls basketball team to snap a two-game losing streak with a 74-39 win over Corn Bible Academy.

The victory moved the Chieftains to 6-6 on the season and 3-1 in Washita Valley Conference play.

Calumet shot 43 percent on the night, including 14 baskets from 2-point range, while hitting 10-of-30 shots from behind the 3-point arc for 33 percent. The Chieftains were 16-of-19 from the free-throw line for 84 percent.

Warriors, Chieftains win big; UC falls to top team

With four of its five scorers reaching double digits, Okarche High School’s boys basketball team jumped back into Three Rivers Conference play last week with a 62-54 win over Oklahoma Bible Academy.

The Warriors, advancing three spots in the latest Class A poll to No.15, improved to 9-3 on the season with their third straight victory. Okarche is 2-0 in conference action.
