A bid for a third straight trip to the Class 5A dual state championships hit a pothole last week as El Reno High School’s wrestling team dropped a narrow 39-35 outing to Elgin in the finals of the 2022 District 3 Championships.

The fifth-ranked Owls (8-0) grabbed one of the eight passes to state, while second-ranked El Reno slipped to 6-4 on the season. The Indians defeated Southeast (72-12) and Woodward (83-0) to reach the district finals.

El Reno falls short of second tournament title against Mustang

El Reno High School’s girls basketball team made its second straight tournament finals but fell short of another title with a 47-32 loss to Class 6A’s eighth-ranked Mustang in the 2022 Shawnee Invitational. The Indians, ranked fourth in Class 5A, slipped to 11-3 on the season with the loss but completed their tournament schedule with no worse than a fifth-place finish.

El Reno reached the title game in Shawnee with a 76-33 win over Ardmore in the first round, followed by a 53-51 victory over Class 5A’s second-ranked Sapulpa.

For the second time this month, El Reno High School’s boys basketball team has dropped two games in tournament play after losing a 69-60 rematch game with Shawnee.

The loss to the Wolves, ranked 17th in Class 5A, came in the consolation finals of the 2022 Shawnee Invitational. El Reno, ranked 14th in the same poll, slipped to 7-7 on the season with the 1-2 tournament showing.

Calumet, Okarche, UCHS earn titles

In the first of two meetings over seven days, Calumet High School’s boys basketball team dropped a 64-60 game to Class A’s top-ranked Hydro-Eakly in the finals of the 2022 West Central Tournament.

Calumet, ranked sixth in the same poll, slipped to 16-5 on the season with the loss to the Bobcats. The Chieftains opened the title run with wins over Thomas/Fay-Custer (64-47) and Burns Flatt/Dill City (46-45).

Matt Snyder was the team’s top scorer for the three games with 55 points, while collecting 24 rebounds, 14 assists, five blocks and three steals.

County girls collect tourney hardware

Taytim Woods scored 14 or more points in all three games as Union City High School’s girls basketball team won the consolation championship at the 2022 Paden Pirates Invitational.

The Tigers moved to 10-8 on the season with a 65-59 win over Carney in the consolation title game.

Union City lost to Sasakwa 50-31 in the opening game before beating Paden’s junior varsity 41-17 in the second round.

Woods had 34 points in the win over Carney and closed the set with 69 points. Mackenzie DeLong followed with 18 points for the tourney, while Bailee Jackson scored 14.

Tuttle takes down El Reno’s win streak

Dealing with both COVID-19 and injury voids in its lineup, El Reno High School’s wrestling team continued a grueling dual schedule last week against perennial powerhouse Tuttle.

Giving up 18 points on forfeits and missing three starters, El Reno suffered a 62-15 loss to the top-ranked team in Class 4A. The Indians, ranked second in Class 5A, slipped to 4-3 on the season.

Calumet, Okarche, Union City pick up double-digit wins

Three guards combined for 35 points as Calumet High School’s girls basketball team jumped back into the win column with a 43-27 victory over Sentinel in the first round of the West Central Tournament.

Calumet, coming off a 53-45 loss to Class A’s 12th-ranked Arapaho-Butler, improved to 12-7 on the year.

Brie Myers led the guard trio with 15 points to go along with four rebounds and four steals. Mattie Pritchett followed with 11 points, four boards and two steals.

Area teams pick up key wins for playoff seeding

Despite posting wins in four of its last five games, including a 51-46 overtime win over Hennessey, Okarche High School’s boys basketball team remains in the 17th spot in the latest Class A poll.

The Hennessey win, which came after a 12-7 scoring edge in the overtime period, moved the Warriors to 13-5 on the season.

Okarche was held to 12 points in the first half, but rebounded with double-digit efforts over the final three periods including a 17-11 run in the fourth period to force overtime.

MIDWEST CITY – Missing four starters and losing out on early-round bonus points after a series of byes, El Reno High School’s wrestling team rallied for a second-place finish at the 2022 Malcolm Wade Invitational.

El Reno, ranked second in Class 5A, racked up 199.5 points to finish behind seventh-ranked Guthrie’s 226. The Bluejays were crowned the Suburban Conference champions since the event doubled as the league tourney.
