El Reno exits tourney in semifinals

After sweeping through pool play undefeated at its own 2022 El Reno High School Invitational, the Indians varsity volleyball team ran into an old foe in the semifinals of Gold Bracket play, losing 2-1 to Tecumseh.

The 25-21/18-22/15-11 loss dropped Class 5A’s 16th-ranked El Reno to 4-2 on the season. It was the second setback in less than a week to the Savages.

The Indians went 3-0 in Pool A play with 2-0 victories over Seminole (25-21/25-20), Santa Fe South (25-18/25-17) and Chickasha (25-19/25-22).

Guthrie hands Indians second straight District 5A-2 setback

Despite a pair of three-hit outings from two of its seniors, El Reno High School’s fast-pitch team suffered a second straight road loss last week with a 6-2 setback at Guthrie.

El Reno is now 4-3 on the season and 1-2 in District 5A-2 and fifth place in the league standings.

Seniors Kira Taber and C.C. Medders had three hits each and combined to score both El Reno runs. In the third inning, Medders doubled and scored on a single by Taber.

In the fifth, Medders hit a single ahead of an RBI-double from Taber.

Harriers open 2022 season at Weatherford

El Reno High School’s cross country team kicked off the 2022 season recently with four girls and a full boys team running in the Weatherford Invitational held at Radar Park.

The boys team placed 14th overall with 376 points, which is calculated off the finish of each runner in the field, with lowest team score taking first. There were 154 runners in the boys field.

Logan Singletary led El Reno’s effort on the 3,200-meter course with a time of 13 minutes and 22.9 seconds and crossed in 86th place.

Early walks aid Calumet in rivalry with UC Tigers

UNION CITY – Taking advantage of five walks, an error and a hit in the top of the first inning, Calumet High School’s fast-pitch softball team built a four-run lead and never trailed en route to a 10-5 win over cross-county rival Union City.

Calumet’s victory snapped a three-game losing streak in the county series, which started in 2019 when Union City added fast-pitch softball. The Tigers still hold an overall lead of 5-4.

Chieftains remain undefeated, hold No. 3 spot in B rankings

KINGFISHER – Not even a change in venue can slow down the hot start of Calumet High School’s baseball team as the Chieftains run-ruled Lomega 9-0 here last week.

The home game for Calumet was moved to Kingfisher due to wet field conditions. The win came on the heels of the Chieftains first state ranking of the fall season - No. 3 in Class B - and moved Cody Thiessen’s squad to 9-0.

RCC soccer kicks off ’22 with losses

Redlands Community College’s soccer team sputtered in its 2022 season openers, dropping two shutout road losses to Kansas-based opponents.

The Cougars lost a close 3-2 match to Pratt Community College before being shut out 3-0 by Garden City Community College.

Redlands logged 23 shots in the two matches, with Gladis Avalos and Amya Lindsay scoring goals. Avalos and Yesenia Rodriguez added an assist each.

Leading the way in shots was Avalos with nine, followed by Lindsay with four and three from Courtney Roe. Moriah Reed and Ariana Whitfield logged two shots each.
