Calumet High School’s boys basketball team moved to within a victory of tying the school record for the most wins in a single season, beating Kinta 46-30 to win the Class B, Area I Championship.

The 16-point win, the 26th by double digits this season and the fourth of the playoffs, lifts the top-ranked Chieftains to 29-0 on the season.

It also returns Jacob Mayfield’s team back to the Elite Eight of the Class B state field for a second straight year and the 10th time since 2000. The Chieftains will be making their 12th state appearance since 1998.

For the first time in its 113-year history, the Oklahoma State High School Wrestling Championships will be spread out over three days, with El Reno having four male grapplers in the field bidding for gold.

Niko Gonzalez (126), Matthew Snyder (132), Preston Scott (144) and Hunter Davidson (157) punched state tickets from a tough Class 5A West Regional Championship hosted by Duncan.

Class 5A state was set to start Thursday evening at the Oklahoma State Fair Arena with pigtail and first-round matches for both girls and boys.

Both El Reno teams were set to open regional play this weekend.

The girls drew a first-round bye and were slated to face Guymon in the regional finals.

The Indians were at Midwest City against Santa Fe South in the first round.

Seniors on El Reno High School’s boys basketball team were honored recently.

Each senior was given a wooden jersey-shaped plaque and a Pendleton blanket provided by C&A Tribes District 2 legislators George Woods (Cheyenne) and Kendricks Sleeper (Arapaho).
 

In the final scheduled meet before regionals, El Reno High School’s powerlifting teams placed in the top 10 at the Fifth Annual Dave Tapp Invitational in Chickasha.

The El Reno boys earned fourth in the Large School Division with 80 points after five lifters placed fifth or better. The EHS girls logged 40 points to take ninth.

Jeremiah Ortiz (123) took first place with a total weight of 875 pounds, posting a 365-pound deadlift, a 325-pound squat and a 185-pound bench press.

The hopes of a county small schools team appearing in the 2024 Girls Oklahoma State High School Basketball Championships for a third straight season has fallen squarely on the shoulders of unranked Okarche High School.

However, the Warriors will have some work to do with their backs to the wall.

Okarche must win three straight games to claim the Class A, Area I Consolation Championships and a ticket to the Elite Eight for a third consecutive season. The first test was against No.15 Texhoma.

Three of Canadian County’s small schools boys basketball teams remain in contention for their respective state tournaments, with Calumet and Okarche moving to within one win of reaching the Elite Eight.

Class B’s top-ranked Calumet High School, now 28-0, is seeking a return trip to state and its 11th overall starting Friday in Henryetta.

The Chieftains will take on sixth-ranked Kitna in the Class B, Area II Championships. It will be a repeat of last year’s state semifinals game which CHS won 39-34.

Redlands Community College women’s basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak in NJCAA Region 2 play with an 86-61 home victory over Western Oklahoma State College.

The two-game slide, which included a 68-57 setback at Eastern Oklahoma State College, had dropped the Cougars out of second in the region standings. The win over the Pioneers lifted RCC, now 17-7 on the season, to 7-4 in the league standings for fourth place.

A multi-game losing streak has kept Redlands Community College men’s basketball team hovering near the bottom of the NJCAA Region 2 standings.

The Cougars dropped games to Eastern Oklahoma (84-68) and Western Oklahoma (93-81) to extend their losing streak to seven games. Redlands is now 10-15 on the season and 2-9 in the region standings for seventh place.

Deazhon Perkins had a line of 31 points, four steals and two rebounds for the two setbacks.

Gregory Limage followed with 21 points, six boards and a pick, followed by 20 points and 10 boards from Adidas Davis.

Held to just a pair of extra base hits, Redlands Community College’s baseball team dropped three home games to Illinois-based Lewis and Clark Community College.

Redlands slipped to 2-13 on the season after dropping the set by scores of 4-2, 9-7 and 24-12.

The series was trimmed from four to three games due to weather.

The Cougars went 21-of-97 (.216) from the plate with a double each from Easton Andrews and Gavyn Smith.
