The Route 66 stories just keep coming.
A native Oklahoman, now living in Arkansas, has created a series of watercolor paintings of scenes found along the famous road that cuts through Oklahoma.
Joseph Buchanan is originally from Elk City. He earned a degree in Arts Education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
More than 100 firefighters from El Reno, El Reno Federal Correctional Institution, Geary, Okarche, Richland and Union City took part in a three-day training session at the Canadian County Administration Building, which is set to be demolished to make space for the new county courthouse.
El Reno sent 27 through the training, which was set up by Canadian County Safety Coordinator and Emergency Manager Blake Foster.
Tammy McKee of Yukon was named the 2025 Outstanding Canadian County Citizen during this year’s Canadian County Free Fair.
McKee was presented with a certificate and the winning cookie jar fair entry, made by Frisco OHCE of El Reno.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Several of Oklahoma’s general aviation airports will see safety and infrastructure updates after the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics commissioners approved 18 projects across the state.
In addition, commissioners approved the aerospace education funding framework which staff will utilize throughout the next fiscal year.
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation and the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority launched a statewide campaign encouraging all Oklahomans to make one lifesaving decision every time they get in a vehicle: buckle up.
Kicking off on Labor Day and continuing throughout September, the campaign titled “Never Skip the Click” comes in response to Oklahoma’s low seat belt usage rate, currently just 86 percent, far below the national average of 91 percent.
In fact, NHTSA data from 2023 ranked Oklahoma 44th in the nation for seat belt use.

El Reno Public Schools will pay $150,000 to Canadian County to purchase part of the old county fairgrounds property.
Commissioners this week approved accepting the ERPS bid price for Parcel D at 220 N. Country Club Road.
This parcel, which appraised for $140,000, has a 3.79-acre parking lot that had previously been used for a statewide truck driver training school.
“Parcel D is the gravel parking lot, and this is for surface only,” Commissioner Tom Manske said.
The El Reno Wranglers Annual Rodeo will soon buck into the Denny-Crump Arena for a two-day run.
The colorful event is set for 7 p.m. on both Sept. 12 and 13. The rodeo will be free for children up to 5 years old and $5 for kids ages 6 to 12. Adult admission will be $15 and admission is by cash only.
Stock for the rodeo will be provided by Rockin R Pro Rodeo Company and the event is IPRA-sanctioned.
The Canadian Valley Rangerettes will perform during the Wranglers Rodeo.
The 2025 Canadian County Free Fair offered a wide array of contests and carnival fun over the weeklong event.
Canadian County’s 2026 holiday schedule has an extra day off for county government employees.
Canadian County offices will be closed 13 days during 2026.
Eleven holidays will be observed, with the first nine being one day each and the last two being two days each.
Commissioners, at their Aug. 25 weekly meeting, voted 3-0 to adopt the 2026 holiday schedule authorizing the closure of county offices. This is required by state statute.
