Pierce named Conservation District award winner

Kaitlyn Pierce was named the Outstanding Conservation District Employee of the Year for 2023.

The honor was presented her at the recent Oklahoma Association of Conservation Districts state meeting in Oklahoma City.

Pierce serves as East Canadian County Conservation District Administrative Assistant.

Savannah Station TRP saddles up CFO grant

Savannah Station Therapeutic Riding Program recently received a huge contribution from the Communities Foundation of Oklahoma (CFO).

Erika Warren, CFO’s director of donor services and programs, presented Savannah Station’s board with a $200,000 gift. The donation will be used to finance a new administration center.

The project is a 3,600-square-foot multi-use administration building. The project will begin in the spring of 2024, with a projected grand opening in early 2025.

DHS lease for health department space put on hold

Body

With plans to develop a new Canadian County Courthouse complex, commissioners took no action last week on a proposal from the state Department of Human Services to renovate part of a downtown El Reno office for its use.

Commissioners agreed to wait before deciding the future of county-owned property at 100 S. Rock Island.

DHS wants to lease about one-third of the first-floor space inside what is now the Canadian County Health Department building.

Center of Family Love to host Teen Board Block Party

The Center of Family Love (CFL) in Okarche will host a Teen Board Block Party on March 30.

The event marks a day of celebration, community engagement and fun for all ages. The event is open to the public.

The Teen Board of CFL is steering this initiative, demonstrating leadership and compassion for the residents who live at the Center.

52nd Annual Junior Livestock Show brings hundreds to Expo Center

After months of cleaning pens, feeding animals and showmanship training, Canadian County youth gathered for the 52nd Annual Canadian County Junior Livestock Show and the subsequent Sale of Champions. The Canadian County Expo Center was the site for the colorful event.

This year’s species shown by exhibitors include swine, sheep, goats, cattle and poultry broilers.

Taste of Sacred Heart total tops the $130,000 mark

The 27th Annual Taste of Sacred Heart delivered in a big way for the El Reno Catholic school.

Organizers said more than $130,000 was raised during the event that featured a live and silent auction, live painting, live music and food.

Ken Reding served as auctioneer for the event.

“We are so grateful to the community for continuing to generously support Sacred Heart Catholic School,” said Holly Eaton, one of the organizers for the annual event.

“Each year we see God’s provision for our school in the success of this event.”

Voters approve change to Sunday liquor law; support Biden, Trump

Canadian County voters said yes to having a drink Sunday morning and threw support to the Republican Democrat front-runners in the presidential primaries.

Sales of alcohol before 2 p.m. on Sundays have been illegal since 1985 in Canadian County. Voters said yes to alcohol sales on Sunday mornings.

The unofficial results with 60 of 60 precincts reported showed 10,518 yes votes, or 59.33 percent, to 7,761 no votes, or 40.67 percent, the Oklahoma State Election Board reports.

El Reno schools contracts with sheriff for deputy security

Body

El Reno Public Schools has contracted with the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office to provide a school resource deputy at the high school.

Sheriff Chris West announced the agreement last week. West said his office is working with the Riverside School District as well.

Both school districts applied for and were awarded state-funded grant monies for these positions.
