Preseason action

Body

El Reno High School’s softball team battled 100-degree heat to kick off its preseason last week with two games in the Southwest Scorcher Festival in Chickasha.

El Reno lost a close 8-7 game to Caney Valley before shutting out Granfield by a 13-0 score.

El Reno was slated to open the season at Weatherford Tuesday, but head coach Bri Michalicka said the game has been switched to a scrimmage due to the date falling before the start of classes for the 2024-25 school term.

Smoke on the Water a success

The total boat count may have been off from what race organizers were expecting but that did not stop Canadian County drivers from showing up and showing off their skills during the 2024 Smoke on the Water Drag Boat Races.

Sixty-three boats entered the event, now in its 11th year at Lake El Reno and 24th overall, down from the 80 that co-organizer Josh Finnigan was shooting for.

“It was lower than we expected and I’m not sure if that 80 count is a pipe dream. The economy may have had something to do with it,” said Finnigan.

Miller powers into winner’s circle

Body

Driving through back-to-back hiccups on the Southern Drag Boat Association racing circuit this year, El Reno’s Matt Miller admitted he needed a win on the water to get his “mojo back.” And there is no better place to get that dub than on your home course.

After being denied a three-peat in the Pro Stock class a year ago, Miller returned to the division’s top spot with a close victory in the finals at the 2024 Smoke on the Water Drag Boat Races.

Davis named 6A’s top wrestler ahead of fall in first period for West

El Reno High School’s most decorated female wrestler added two more highlights to her storied career last week during the Oklahoma Coaches Association’s All-State Wrestling Matches.

Competing at Broken Arrow High School, Kaylee Davis was named the OCA's Class 6A Female Wrestler of the Year.

In Oklahoma, girls compete in two classifications and this was the first season for the association to offer All-State matches for girls.

“She was pumped and had no idea she was getting that,” said El Reno head coach Chad Whitney of Davis’ award.

Nicholson scores TD in gridiron loss to East

SHAWNEE – Malachi Nicholson was not always a big celebration guy in the end zone during his record-setting senior season at El Reno High School.

Yet that changed in his final high school outing, the 2024 Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State Football Game.

“It’s All-State and you’ve got to show everything,” said Nicholson.

After scoring the West’s lone touchdown in a 14-6 loss to the East, Nicholson got up, sprinted to the middle of the end zone and stuck a backflip.

Smoke on the Water staff reviews safety procedures

A fatality wreck during a recent event in Texas has organizers of this weekend’s Smoke on the Water Drag Boat Races reviewing their safety measures.

“It makes you take a step back and evaluate things. It was a shock that rattles you to your core. We are aware, concerned and cautious moving forward. It’s (safety) something we don't take lightly,” said co-organizer Josh Finnigan.

Smooth sailing during early days for skipper

Under the circumstances which led to her hiring as El Reno High School’s softball coach, Bri Michalicka was expecting to encounter some rocky situations during her first two months on the job.

Former head coach Jason Little resigned in March under a cloud of controversy after one season.

Michalicka was hired in early May, having no head coaching experience on the high school level and just one season under her belt as Little’s assistant.
