Blue and channel catfish fair on cut bait, hot dogs, shad, shrimp and stinkbait around channels, points, riprap and rocks. Crappie slow on jigs, minnows and tube jigs around brush structure, coves, docks and standing timber.

Racing on the Mother Road

After winning his age group in the Duathlon bracket of the Route 66 Triathlon Festivus the past two years, El Reno’s Shanon Eichholz made the switch to the full three stages of last weekend’s event.

And without surprise, he won yet again.

“Saturday’s race was a good one. Had good weather and good competition,” said Eichholz.

Indians run-rule Heritage Hall

Body

El Reno High School’s Varsity 1 baseball team remains undefeated in Red Dirt League action with a 14-1 win over Heritage Hall last week at the Hub Reed Complex.

The Indians moved to 3-0 in the Wooden Bat Division of the RDL standings. The second game of the doubleheader with the Chargers was a mix of Varsity 1 and Varsity 2 players and ended in a 3-3 tie after five innings.

In the opener, Heritage Hall scored a run before El Reno rallied for three runs in the bottom of the first.

Gabe Compton walked and scored on a double to the wall by Davin Shamblin.

ER boys look to regroup with summer work

While he stops short of calling it a rebuild, El Reno High School boys basketball coach Rodney Haydon calls the month of June critical to his program’s rebound from the loss of a large graduation class.

“We are grinding things out and putting in the time. We went to Mustang team camp and played six games with the varsity and then took the junior varsity to Okarche. The varsity will go back there this week.

El Reno sweeps Knights

Hernan Blanco hit a walk-off triple as El Reno High School’s Varsity 1 baseball team kicked off its summer schedule with a 9-0 win over Crossings Christian School.

The victory was part of a Red Dirt League doubleheader, with El Reno sweeping the Knights via a 9-3 decision in the nightcap. El Reno is playing in the RDL Wooden Bat Division.

Running strong on Route 66

The Route 66 Triathlon was held over the weekend around Lake El Reno and along Route 66.

The three-stage event featured several distance races.

Indians make solid gains in spring work

Less than a month into his tenure as defensive coordinator, Michael Pruitt has already gotten a leg up on veteran coach and El Reno High School offensive play-caller Graham Snelding.

The two coached teams for the intrasquad scrimmage which capped off EHS’ spring drills, with Pruitt’s team edging out the other by a touchdown.

“Coach Pruitt and Coach Snelding sat down and tried to even out both teams as best as they could. It showed that our offense is ahead of our defense but the major part of that is we have a new defensive coordinator.

Ashbrook Derby reels in youth anglers

As overnight showers yielded to sunny skies, the 2023 Mary K. Ashbrook Kids Fishing Derby drew close to 300 youth anglers to the banks of Lake El Reno.

Hosted by the El Reno Sportsman’s Club, the event pulled in a total of 291 anglers ranging in age from under 3 years old up to age 15.

The field snagged several species of fish including bass, catfish, crappie and carp, leading to 114 youth presenting catches for the weigh-in.

Solid summer start for hoops

El Reno High School point guard Carter Roman Nose drives around a Newcastle defender in the first half of the Indians game with the Racers to kick off EHS’ run in the 2023 Mustang Boys Summer League.

El Reno rallied to defeat Newcastle before dropping close games to Mustang and Putnam City West.
