Redlands Community College men’s basketball team kicked off the new year by jumping back into the win column with an 85-72 victory over Texas-based Loyalty College Prep.
The Cougars improved to 8-6 on the season with the win.
Redlands had four players score in double digits, led by Deazhon Perkins with 22 points off 9-of-17 shooting, three of those coming from the 3-point arc. He added five rebounds, five steals and three assists.
ANADARKO - A steal and a coast-to-coast layup by Nazhoni Sleeper sent El Reno High School’s girls basketball team on the path to a wire-to-wire win over the host team in the championship game of the 2024 Anadarko Warriors Classic.
El Reno’s 40-23 victory over the Warriors, ranked second in the state in Class 4A, moved the Indians to 10-0 on the season.
Jennifer Douglas’ team reached the finals with wins over Capitol Hill (69-11) and Cache (67-29).
ANADARKO – Scoring from both in the paint and from the 3-point line, El Reno High School’s boys basketball team used a 16-12 break in the first period to kick-start its defense of the championship from the 2024 Anadarko Warriors Classic.
El Reno defeated Anadarko, ranked sixth in Class 4A, 60-38 for its fourth straight win.
The Indians improved to 8-2 on the season and secured the Warriors Classic title for a second straight year.
In its fourth dual of the season against a ranked opponent, El Reno High School’s wrestling team dropped a series of matches early and late in a close 41-36 loss to Class 5A’s 12th-ranked Guthrie.
The loss dropped the Indians, ranked ninth in the same poll, to 3-3 on the year.
“Lost some matches we shouldn’t,” said El Reno head coach Anthony McDonald.
El Reno started out in a 14-0 bind as Terry Guzman (113) and Cash Reyes (120) dropped matches by a combined score of 23-5. The Indians got their first win from Foxx Kurtz (126) via a 2:43 fall over Colten Stevens.
Last season, Kaylee Davis and Hannah Koen made history by becoming El Reno High School’s first two qualifiers for the Oklahoma Girls State High School Wrestling Championships.
Last week the two seniors added yet another first to their EHS resumes.
The duo scored 12 team points in just over two minutes of action to lead the EHS girls wrestling team to a 36-12 victory over Clinton in the first-ever girls home dual in school history.
Still shuffling spots in its lineup, El Reno High School’s boys wrestling team opened up 2024 with a lopsided 58-12 win over Weatherford last week in the first home dual of the season.
The 46-point win over the Eagles snaps a two-dual slide for the Indians, ranked ninth in Class 5A, improving Anthony McDonald’s team to 3-2 on the season.
“We wrestled pretty well tonight. We are still working through some injuries.
“We got some guys back and we lost a couple of guys, but I saw some good things,” said McDonald.
El Reno High School’s boys basketball program held two workouts over the holiday break against former players.
Seeking its first win of the 2023-24 season, Calumet High School’s girls basketball team came close in last week’s road game at Geary but settled for a 40-39 loss to the Bison.
Calumet slipped to 0-11 on the season and 0-5 in the Washita Valley Conference standings.
The Chieftains held a two-point lead with a minute left in the contest, said head coach John Garrett, before Geary hit what proved to be the game-winning 3-pointer off an inbound play in the waning seconds.
Calumet High School’s boys basketball team showed little rust last week from an 18-day holiday break, rolling into the 2024 portion of its schedule with an 87-19 win over Geary.
The Chieftains, ranked No.1 in Class B, improved to 12-0 on the season with their 11th game with more than 70 points on offense. Eight of those have gone for 80 or more points as Calumet has now won 32 regular-season games in a row dating back to last season.
The win moved Calumet to 5-0 in the Washita Valley Conference standings.
Redlands Community College women’s basketball team will kick off the 2024 portion of its schedule in Texas with a little bit of revenge on the agenda against Frank Phillips College.
The Plainsmen ended Redlands’ four-game win streak in El Reno last month with an eight-point win. It was the first home loss for the Cougars on the season.
Redlands rebounded from the FPC loss with a 60-54 victory over Crowder to close out 2023 and will look to continue that momentum in the final game before the start of NJCAA Region 2 action.
