Clutch free-throw shooting from Carter Roman Nose helped seal a pair of nail-biting victories for El Reno High School’s boys basketball team last week in District 5A-1 play.

The junior hit the back end of a two-shot trip to the line with 37.5 seconds left to give the Indians a three-point lead in what led to a 51-50 road win at Shawnee. A day later, Roman Nose made two free throws with 18.8 seconds left to give the Indians a four-point lead as El Reno stunned Crossings Christian 55-53 and handed the Knights their first league loss.

Thirteen different players scored as Okarche High School’s girls basketball team won its seventh straight game with a 59-19 decision over cross-county rival Calumet.

The win pushed the Warriors to 15-7 on the year and 2-0 versus small schools inside Canadian County.

The win was the third in four days for Okarche after beating Strother (55-23) and Amber-Pocasset (34-21).

Katie Parham paced the Warriors in scoring for the three-game set with 31 points after putting up 11 in the win over Calumet. Harper White added nine points in the win over CHS and 24 for the set.

Pushed by a 16-12 run in the fourth quarter, Calumet High School’s boys basketball team is king of the hill among Canadian County’s small schools following a 55-51 win over Class A’s fourth-ranked Okarche.

Calumet, the top-ranked team in Class B, improved to 24-0 on the year and extended its regular-season win streak to 44 games dating back to last season.

Redlands Community College women’s basketball team had its three-game win streak snapped last week with a 65-40 road loss to region front-runner Connors State College.

The 25-point loss dropped Redlands to 14-5 overall and back into a tie for second place in the NJCAA Region 2 standings with a 4-2 mark – even with Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.

The Cougars entered the game with the Cowboys after beating Murray State College (68-65) to extend their win streak to three games.

Back-to-back losses have slipped Redlands Community College men’s basketball team two spots down in the latest NJCAA Region 2 standings.

The Cougars dropped a home game to Murray State College (94-83) before taking to the road for a 105-63 blowout loss to Connors State College, leaving RCC with a 10-10 overall record.

Redlands is now seventh in the regional standings with a 2-4 record.

Deazhon Perkins scored 33 points against Murray State and led all Redlands scoring for the two-game set with 60 points. He added five rebounds and a steal.

El Reno High School girls basketball coach Jennifer Douglas presented senior Pauline Black-Harmon with a plaque last week honoring her accomplishment as EHS’ all-time leading rebounder.

She broke the record set in 1996 by LeAnn Bezner.

Shaking off a series of first-half turnovers, El Reno High School’s girls basketball team led Altus wire to wire last week to remain unbeaten on the season.

The Indians moved to 17-0 overall with a 66-39 decision over the Bulldogs and now are the only unbeaten team in Class 5A. It was the Indians 17th straight double-digit win.

El Reno moved to 8-0 in the District 5A-1 standings and remains a game ahead of Shawnee (7-1), which the Indians were slated to host Monday in a makeup game.

El Reno High School guard Carter Roman Nose went into last week’s game against Altus needing 29 points, more than he had scored in any game this season, to reach the 1,000-point career scoring mark.

He needed less than two quarters to reach that mark.

Surpassing his previous season best single game mark by five, Roman Nose scored 31 points in the first half as the Indians jumped back into the win column with a 78-23 victory over the Bulldogs.

MIDWEST CITY – After two date and time shuffles as well as three teams dropping out, the District 5A-3 championship came down to a decades-old rivalry between state powers. Carl Albert, ranked ninth in the state, won the final four weights to rally past 11th-ranked El Reno for a 37-27 victory. The 10-point win sends the Titans to the Class 5A Dual State Championships Feb. 10 in Enid.

The district duals were moved twice from the original Jan. 16 date and were whittled from five teams to two after Woodward, John Marshall and Bishop McGuinness backed out.

The Indians were slated to host Altus Friday night inside Jenks Simmons Field House.

El Reno will have two more home contests to follow against Elgin (Feb. 2) and Shawnee (Feb. 13) before the end of the regular season.
