Tweet turns Plumley’s dream into reality, signs with Sooners

El Reno senior Dorian Plumley has hung just about every piece of mail received from the University of Oklahoma on his bedroom wall, hoping and wishing to one day become a Sooner.

“Every time I walk into my bedroom, I see all the stuff I have gotten from them over the years and the field passes, but they had not recruited me. Oklahoma has always been one of the top programs in sports and education and I always wanted to be on that level,” said Plumley.

Sparked by a 22-3 run in the first period, El Reno High School’s girls basketball team took control of the race for the Suburban Conference title with a 52-40 win over Del City.

The win lifted El Reno, ranked seventh in Class 5A, to 10-4 on the season. The Indians are 3-1 in conference play but moved to 3-0 in games which count toward the championship.

The fast start was paced from the 3-point line as Kenzie Holsted and Sierra Sioux both hit two shots each.

While playing Class 6A’s second-ranked Del City close in the middle periods, El Reno High School’s boys basketball team could not match the starting and closing efforts of the Eagles.

Del City outscored El Reno 34-18 in the two book-end periods combined en route to a 73-52 win over the Indians in Suburban Conference action.

The loss dropped El Reno, ranked 14th in Class 5A, to 7-8 on the season and 2-3 in the conference standings.

The Indians are 1-2 in games which count toward the league title.

With six falls and a handful of forfeits, El Reno High School’s wrestling team, ranked sixth in the Class 5A Dual Rankings, defeated Geary last week 60-6 for its sixth straight victory.

El Reno matched its largest winning margin of the season for on-mat matches to improve to 8-1 on the season.

The contest, wrestled in Piedmont as part of a triangular, replaced the Noble match which was lost by a scheduling snafu by the Bears.

Chieftains take undefeated record into playoffs

While getting games played due to COVID-19 has been a challenge, Calumet High School’s boys basketball team will start the Class A playoffs this weekend as one of just two undefeated teams in the top 20.

The Chieftains closed the regular season with a 72-35 blowout of Crescent despite a two-week break due to the virus. Calumet, ranked fifth in Class A, will take a 13-0 record into the Region 1, District 8 championship game against either Pond Creek-Hunter or Oklahoma Bible Academy.

Game time is 8 p.m. Saturday.

El Reno duo earn All-State honors

El Reno High School’s football program added two more names to its storied list of elite players as seniors Dorian Plumley and Darius Moore were selected to the Oklahoma Coaches Association’s All-State Team.

Both will play for the Large West squad which will take on the East July 30 at a site to be determined.

PIEDMONT – After being denied a game-winning basket at the buzzer, El Reno High School’s girls basketball team, ranked seventh in Class 5A, went on a 10-4 run in overtime to defeat Piedmont.

The 62-56 victory over the third-ranked Wildcats lifted El Reno to 9-4 on the season and 3-1 in the Suburban Conference standings. The Indians are 2-0 in games which count toward the title.

El Reno trailed by as many as seven in the fourth period but made a late run. Ashlyn Evans-Thompson’s jumper with 2:14 left in regulation cut Piedmont’s lead to three.

PIEDMONT – A little over 24 hours after El Reno High School’s wrestling team defeated Piedmont, the boys basketball team made it a clean sweep of the Wildcats in Suburban Conference action.

Fueled by a 24-point blitz in the first period, El Reno rolled to a 78-54 win over Piedmont to sweep the season series on the hard court.

The victory moved El Reno, ranked 14th in Class 5A, to 7-7 on the season and 2-2 in the Suburban Conference standings. The Indians are 1-1 in games which count toward the title.

Sealed with key wins in the heavier weights, El Reno High School’s wrestling team earned its first win over cross-county rival Piedmont in more than five years.

The Indians, ranked sixth in the latest Class 5A dual rankings, defeated the Wildcats 42-33. The win over eighth-ranked Piedmont, postponed from early December, lifted El Reno to 6-1 on the season and 3-0 against Suburban Conference opponents.
