Union City rebounds, CHS sliding

Bouncing back from a three-run home loss to Class A’s 20th-ranked Ninnekah, Union City High School’s softball team ripped off two lopsided wins over Calumet and Geary.

The Tigers lost 10-7 to the Owls before sweeping the season series with Calumet by a 19-1 score. Union City then defeated Geary 19-0 to improve to 13-9 on the season.

Cody Schmidt’s team went 25-of-56 (.446) from the plate for the three-game set, getting two doubles each from Makinzie and Makenna DeLong. Alexis Archer and Oceanna Schranz added one double each.

UC Tigers win at home; Olive seals CHS victory

After giving up two runs in the top of the first inning, Union City High School’s baseball team went on a 7-1 run to rally past Geronimo for a 7-3 victory.

The Tigers were slated to play Ninnekah, but the Owls were in quarantine for COVID-19 issues. The win over Geronimo lifted Union City to 10-6 on the season heading into its own wooden bat tournament this weekend.

Union City went 7-of-26 from the plate (.269) in the win with Corbin McKinney going 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. J.D. Riley was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in.

Redlands men sixth in Aggie Duals; women run four harriers

Redlands Community College’s cross country team traveled to Lawton recently to compete in the 2021 Cameron University Aggie Duals, with the men’s team placing sixth overall.

The Cougars posted an overall time of 2 hours, 33 minutes and 58 seconds over the 8,000-meter course, for an average time of 30:47.56.

Braden Swearingen had the fastest time for Redlands at 29:35 to place 35th overall.

He was followed by teammates Kyle Zielinski (29:40) in 36th place and Liam Johnson (29:46) in 37th place.

El Reno High School’s softball team had another strong outing at the plate in the 2021 Bixby Invitational over the weekend, but struggled against several Class 6A schools to put runs on the scoreboard.

The Indians slipped to 5-12 on the season after posting a 2-3 record in the event. El Reno defeated Muldrow, the District 4A-8 leader, 10-3.

Kylee Webb’s team defeated Tulsa Union 14-13. The Redskins are the fourth-ranked team in Class 6A-4.

Spikers downed by ranked opponents in Noble event

Running into a pair of fellow Class 5A ranked opponents, El Reno High School’s volleyball team posted a 2-3 record in weekend action at the 2021 Noble Invitational.

The Indians, ranked 10th in the state in Class 5A, dropped to 11-8 on the season following setbacks to No.9 Piedmont (25-15/25-18) and fifth-ranked Sapulpa (25-15/25-18).

The other loss was to Class 6A’s unranked Yukon (25-18/25-18). EHS was runner-up in the Silver Bracket.

El Reno defeated Seminole for a second time this season by a 2-0 score, while downing Del City by the same margin.

Redlands golf team third in fall opener at Lake Hefner

Redlands Community College’s golf team opened up its fall schedule recently with a third-place finish in the Southwestern Christian University Invitational.

Playing the South Course at Lake Hefner Golf Club, Redlands posted rounds of 298 and 307 for a 605 total for the 36-hole event. Oklahoma City University won the event with a 560 effort, while Dodge City Community College was second at 593.

Redlands beat Texas-based Tyler Junior College by four strokes and Kansas Wesleyan University by five.

Guymon’s seventh-inning stretch ended up plucking two road wins off the victory tree from El Reno High School’s softball team last week in District 5A-2 action.

The two one-run setbacks at Guymon, 3-2 and 4-3, extended El Reno’s current losing streak to three straight games as the Indians slipped to 3-9 on the season.

Kylee Webb’s team is now sixth in the 5A-2 standings at 1-5, while the Tigers jumped to third.

El Reno took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning in game one before Guymon hit a walk-off double with two runners on base.

Indians stir-fry Chicks in three

Delayed a week due to COVID-19 issues, El Reno High School’s volleyball team kicked off the home portion of its 2021 schedule with a 3-0 win over U.S. 81 rival Chickasha last week.

The 25-17/25-13/25-15 win lifted the Class 5A’s 10th-ranked Indians to 9-5 on the season.

El Reno trailed only twice in the match in games one and two, but never more than three points. The Indians rallied from those deficits at the serving line, closing with a 94.5 percent effort (69-of-73) with 14 aces.

The Indians had to forfeit their second straight game this week with Weatherford due to COVID-19 exposure and quarantine stemming from the game with Cache.

UC softball snaps three-game slide, Calumet woes continue

Union City High School’s softball team snapped a three-game slide last week with a 15-5 road win over Carnegie.

The 10-run victory came on the heels of losses to Verden (12-6) and Class A’s top-ranked Binger-Oney (12-2) as the unranked Tigers improved to 11-8 on the season.

Makinzie DeLong had four hits in the win over Carnegie, including a pair of two-baggers, while driving in three runs and scoring two more.

Jordan Schmidt, Makenna DeLong, Kylie McCoy and Kaitlyn Linson all doubled in the 17-hit UCHS attack.
