Battle for the county

Body

CALUMET – Fast-paced shootouts are expected when Calumet and Okarche high school’s boys basketball teams meet and last week’s installment of the cross-county rivalry did little to damage that reputation.

Okarche used a 19-8 run in the fourth period to rally from an eight-point deficit to hand the Chieftains their first loss of the season, 74-71.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak in the series for Okarche, now 1-1 on the year. The Warriors last win over Calumet was a three-point decision in 2017.

While a shoulder injury relegated her to back row libero duties for her senior year, El Reno High School’s Bailey Denwalt was recently named an alternate for the Oklahoma Coaches Association’s Large School All-State Volleyball Team. All-State volleyball teams are two 10-member squads, East and West, with the Large School division consisting of players from Classes 5A and 6A.

This year each of those classifications ended up with five picks each.

Late-season momentum is key to any program heading into the 2022 playoffs and there is no argument that El Reno High School’s football team is peaking at the right time.

El Reno’s 21-point win over Altus was the fourth in a row for the Indians and fifth in the last six games after an 0-4 start to the season.

“It was important to get this win (Altus) because we were not expected to win any games or very few at the start of the season and here we are on a four-game win streak,” said quarterback Elijah Fisher.

Yet it’s playoff time and records all reset to zero.
