ER matmen bombard Midwest City

Body

For 54 days, senior Ryan Sigler has stewed over El Reno High School’s only shutout loss of the football season at the hands of the Midwest City Bombers. Last week he got his revenge.

Sigler, wrestling at 215 pounds, pinned Midwest City’s Noah Haydon at the 2:41 mark for El Reno’s eighth and final fall as the Indians opened up the 2022-23 dual season with a 69-10 explosion over the Bombers.

Okarche begins proving state ranking; Union City runs into road buzzsaw

Head coach Haley Mitchell feels her Okarche High School girls basketball team still has to earn the respect of pollsters on the court, which the Warriors did in the first game after the season’s initial rankings.

Okarche got double-digit scoring efforts from Scout Payne and Jalie Rother to lead the Warriors to a 71-23 win over Coyle. Ranked sixth in that first poll, OHS improved to 3-2 on the season.

Payne knocked down four 3-pointers en route to her 18 points. Rother scored 10 of her 18 points for the game in the first period, six of those off a pair of 3-pointers.

Haydon feels Indians roster depth, returning experience will carry team to upper echelon

Body

Coming back to the bench two years ago, head coach Rodney Haydon said it would take time and patience to retool El Reno High School’s boys basketball program back into a state-tournament team.

Tuesday night the Indians head to Shawnee to begin Haydon’s third season of his second stint as head coach with roster pieces that could very well send El Reno back to the Big Eight in Class 5A.

“We for sure have a lot of playing time and experience coming back and several move-ins that could get a lot of playing time. We have a chance to have a lot of depth,” said Haydon.

Tyrone Lewis knew it would take time to rebuild El Reno High School’s wrestling program into the national powerhouse it was when he won multiple state titles under his mentor Archie Randall.

Now entering his sixth year as head coach, Lewis feels all the pieces of that rebuilding puzzle rest before him, it’s just a matter of getting them to fit into the right spots.

El Reno defenders named all-district

Body

A big portion of the numbers from El Reno High School’s football season was generated by underclassmen, but head coach Russell Cook is quick to point out their success was spearheaded by senior leadership.

Six of the players from the class of 2023 were honored last week with spots on the 2022 All-District 5A-1 team, including two superlative awards on defense.

Representing El Reno on the senior-only team were Evan Roman Nose, Ryan Sigler, Devonne Smith, Diante Palmer, Nate Karty and James Reveles.
