John Christopher Holthe of Okarche passed away Oct. 25, 2024.

He was born Aug. 12, 1968, in Midwest City. From birth, John faced the challenges of cerebral palsy. Despite these hardships, he persevered and earned both his high school and college diplomas.

He was known for his sharp wit and sense of humor, writing columns for the SWOSU newspaper and the Altus Times.

John is survived by his sister, Cathy Stone, and his brothers, Otto Holthe Jr. and Sam Holthe.

Historic county jail gets new roof, interior work up next

The historic Canadian County Jail is now weatherproof. Workers with J.T. Chronister Construction completed the task of putting a new roof on the jail.

The building is safe from any further interior damage and the threat of being demolished,” said Amy Neathery, president of Preservation El Reno and city council representative.

A come-and-go event to celebrate the roof installation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Old County Stables, 214 W. Rogers, just to the east of the jail.

Teachers can apply for Williamsburg fellowships

OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma fifth- and eighth-grade teachers can apply now for fellowships to attend the Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute in summer 2025. 

The Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence coordinates the selection of educators from the state to participate in the renowned teacher institute, which is held in and around the restored capital city of 18th-century Virginia.

Graveside services for George Michael Burdick, a former Minco resident, were held Friday, Oct. 25 at the Lawson Cemetery in Yale, under the direction of Huber-Reynolds Funeral Home of Minco.

Mike died Oct. 19, 2024, in Tuttle. He was born Oct. 16, 1959, in Crossett, Ark. He had lived in the Minco community, later moving to Tuttle. He had been employed in the food service industry. 

Mike is survived by his mother, Gertrude Burdick of Edmond; his son, Stephen Roberts of Edmond; brothers, Kendall Burdick of Norman and Erik Burdick of Oklahoma City; and two grandchildren.
