Domestic Violence Awareness Month recognized by county

Body

Canadian County commissioners issued a proclamation last week recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Carolyn Husmann, associate director of the Intervention Crisis Advocacy Network (ICAN), said Oklahoma ranks third highest in the nation for intimate partner violence.

Statistics show intimate partner violence accounts for 15 percent of all violent crime. A victim of domestic violence will attempt to leave the abuser an average of “seven to nine times” before they actually break free.

Body

One of America’s most popular conservative pundits is known for his catchphrase, “Facts don’t care about your feelings.”

While people may feel differently about the policy of SQ 805, here are the facts.

Oklahoma has one of the highest incarceration rates in the country. We have the highest incarceration rate for women. Yet Oklahoma crime rates are not so extreme -- neither in the very worst nor the very best among the states.
