UC holds off Verden; Calumet drops opener

Union City High School’s girls basketball team jumped out to a 10-point halftime lead over Verden and then held off a feverish fourth-period rally by the Tigers for a 47-40 win to kick off the 2020-21 season.

Verden trailed by 11 points going into the fourth period but outscored Union City 15-9 over the final eight minutes to keep the game close.

Daniel Anderson’s team made only three buckets in the fourth but two of those were 3-pointers from Kailee Jackson and a Kami Leonard bucket before fouling out.

County declares state of emergency following ice storm

Canadian County officials have taken the first steps in an effort to recoup some of the costs of recovering from last week’s ice storm damage.

County commissioners approved a proclamation declaring a state of emergency.

The approval will allow not only the county but municipalities an opportunity to seek federal disaster funds, should they be approved. The commissioners approved the proclamation without discussion.

Calumet FTs secure win over B-0 Bobcats

While making just 20 shots from the floor, Calumet High School’s boys basketball team opened up the 2020-21 season with a 67-58 win over Binger-Oney with strong free-throw shooting.

The Chieftains moved to 1-0 in the Washita Valley Conference standings after padding an eight-point lead after three periods with a 13-of-17 ( 76 percent) effort from the line over the final eight minutes.

Calumet closed the game making 23-of-29 attempts from the charity stripe for 79 percent. Mark Castillo scored a game-high 20 points, highlighted by his 8-of-11 mark at the line.
