The 49th Annual Canadian County Junior Livestock Show and Sale got under way over the weekend at the county fairgrounds and was set to conclude Tuesday with an online virtual auction. The 2021 show will be the final one at the current fairgrounds before moving to the county’s new fairgrounds now under construction.

Brown says residents need to register shelters ahead of spring storms

Springtime in Oklahoma means the threat of severe weather.

El Reno Police Chief Ken Brown said last week residents with storm shelters need to register them with the city so rescue teams know where to search in the event a major tornado strikes.

Brown made the comments as part of the El Reno Live program hosted weekly by Mayor Matt White. The program airs at 3 p.m. each Thursday on the city’s Facebook site. It can also be viewed on the Tribune Facebook site.

El Reno veteran Oltermann honored at Capitol ceremony

State Rep. Rhonda Baker, R-Yukon, recognized El Reno’s Ralph Oltermann as the Veteran of the Week on March 1 in a ceremony at the Oklahoma House of Representatives.

Oltermann served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, earning the rank of E2. He received an honorable discharge after being injured during the war, and he later suffered cancer of his larynx from exposure to Agent Orange.

Calumet voters pass new school bond issue

Construction zones will once again be found on Calumet School properties after voters approved a $2.5 million bond to fund three new projects.

“We are very excited. You never know how those things will go. We have had a lot of success in the past and never want to take that for granted. We wanted people to go out and vote and we are happy there was a pretty good turnout and things went our way,” said Calumet Superintendent Brandon Voss.

U.S. Cavalry Association awarded grant from state Heritage Preservation

The U.S. Cavalry Association has been awarded a grant through the Oklahoma Heritage Preservation Grant Program to help create a website and digitize records. The association is headquartered at historic Fort Reno.

“Congratulations to the U.S. Cavalry Association on being awarded the Oklahoma Heritage Preservation Grant,” said Sen. Lonnie Patxon, Tuttle.

“Digitizing historic records and making them publicly accessible online is vital for saving and sharing our history for future generations.”

But the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic has created a new traditional classroom setting. And for El Reno educators, add school closures caused by winter storms and lack of running water.

Burger Day put on the back burner

El Reno will put off Burger Day for one more year, but the first Saturday in May won’t be without plenty of fun as a new festival will be launched before moving to July in 2022.

Shana Ford, Main Street director, said the inaugural Route 66 Family Fun Fest and Cornhole Tournament will replace the annual Fried Onion Burger Day Festival, normally held the first Saturday in May.

But only for this year.

El Reno picks top teachers

El Reno Public Schools released Teacher of the Year honorees for each of its seven educational sites for the 2020-21 school year.

Burdine teaches high school Algebra 2, Algebra 3 and Pre-Calculus. This is his fourth year teaching, all in El Reno.

Burdine was in the construction industry for 20 years before going back to school to obtain a teaching degree.
