Lawmaker Miller holds study on state’s expungement reform

OKLAHOMA CITY – Rep. Nicole Miller, R-Edmond, hosted an interim study to examine Oklahoma’s existing expungement system and potential avenues to further reform in Oklahoma.

Interim Study 21-054, held before the House Judiciary – Criminal Committee, focused on the economic impact of additional reforms, including access to education and workforce development.

“I don’t know all the answers, but I will tell you this: I believe that this is an issue that is worth working on,” Miller told the committee in an opening statement.

Oil, gas taxes fuel jump in August gross receipts

Oklahoma Gross Receipts to the Treasury in August grew by almost 20 percent over the year with a rebounding fossil fuel industry leading the way, State Treasurer Randy McDaniel said last week.

Total monthly gross receipts of $1.17 billion are higher than August of last year by $191.2 million, or 19.5 percent.

Collections from the gross production tax on oil and natural gas are up by more than 150 percent. Individual income tax, sales and use tax and motor vehicle receipts also grew by double digits during the month.

Could the partnership that created the BlueSTEM AgriLearning Center at Fort Reno have imagined how sweet of an education experience the program would become for area students?

Now in its sixth year, BlueSTEM has grown from its original class of three students to 31 this school year. High school students from El Reno, Yukon and Calumet are members of the current BlueSTEM class.

Race develops for Ward 2 city council seat

Body

A race has developed for the El Reno City Council Ward 2 seat.

Incumbent Bob Ballhorn will be challenged by Peter Stapperfend for the position that will be decided in the Nov. 9 election.

The candidate winning the most votes will be elected to serve a four-year term.

Ballhorn, 61, currently serves as vice mayor. He said he is running because he wants to help continue the forward momentum he said El Reno is experiencing.

Herr, Kearby named Outstanding Citizens during county fair

During the Canadian County Fair Family Night festivities, Kate Kearby of Piedmont and Joan Herr of El Reno were recognized with the 2021 Outstanding Canadian County Citizen Awards.

Kearby and Herr were presented with a certificate and the top winning cookie jar fair entries, made by Underwood OHCE and Sunshine OHCE Groups.

Memorial Stadium renovations revealed

Body

A group of people involved in the million-dollar renovation of Memorial Stadium gathered last week to celebrate the improvements.

A few hours later they learned the El Reno High School football game scheduled for Friday night would be canceled because of COVID.

School board members Dallas Curtis, Brad Baker and Curtis Blanc were on hand for the celebration. Curtis was singled out by Superintendent Craig McVay for his efforts in pushing the project forward.
