COVID-19 funds sought to move health department

Property is being sought to move the Canadian County Health Department in El Reno.

County health officials have applied for $10 million in federal COVID-19 stimulus funds awarded to Canadian County. Canadian County commissioners “in a few weeks” are expected to decide on how to distribute the county’s $28.8 million American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) allocation during an open meeting, Commissioner David Anderson said.

Hobson awarded Guggenheim Fellowship

El Reno native and acclaimed author Brandon Hobson has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, one of the most prestigious honors bestowed on a writer, historian, scholar or artist.

The award is the second garnered by Hobson this year. In April, his most recent book, “The Removed” was honored as the Western Heritage Outstanding Fiction Book of 2021.

His parents, Fred and Jeanne Hobson, accepted the award during a gala at the Western Heritage Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City.

Smash Week raises money through $20 student passes to different events and donations from the community and area businesses. Money raised this year will be donated to Tishomingo High School, which lost six students earlier this year in a car accident.

The annual Letter Carrier Food Drive is returning to El Reno after taking a two-year hiatus because of the COVID pandemic.

Janice Cox, a postal employee who coordinates the Letter Carrier Food Drive in El Reno, said the collection will take place May 14.

“It’s always the second Saturday in May,” Cox said.

Begun in 1993 by the National Letter Carriers Association, the food drive is especially important to The Lord’s Harvest food ministry in El Reno.

Troncoso named president of Great Plains Bank El Reno branch

Gerardo Troncoso has been named Great Plains Bank El Reno branch president.

In a statement, the bank said Troncoso’s promotion comes after the recent Great Plains Bank branch opening in Yukon, where previous branch president Chase Tippens has been promoted to Yukon market president.

Troncoso has been in the banking industry for 10 years, with the last two years spent at Great Plains Bank as a senior vice president, commercial lender in El Reno.

Canadian County lawyers William Flanagan and Jack Dawson were honored by fellow attorneys and judges last week for 50 years as members of the Oklahoma Bar Association.

Both lawyers made speeches and introduced family members in attendance before refreshments were served.

The annual Holy Trinity Catholic School Track Meet attracted more than 350 participants from Holy Trinity, Sacred Heart, El Reno, St. Charles in Oklahoma City and St. John Nepomuk in Yukon.
