For 35 years, ICAN has served domestic violence victims in Canadian County.

Its services have never been in greater demand. With the reshuffling of the Canadian County Health Department due to the purchase of the former Halliburton building, Cardinal Point, along with ICAN, could be expanding to Yukon.

The number of clients ICAN serves has risen in recent years. Executive Director Matt Whetzel said in the past fiscal year, ICAN staff worked with 639 total clients, of whom 271 are from Yukon.

Mark and Vicki Myers were in their 20’s when they moved to East Cavanaugh. In 1983, they built a home in the wooded and secluded area in east El Reno just off Shepard Avenue.

The area is like a wildlife habitat in the middle of town. Vicki said wild turkeys, coyotes, deer and other critters are often seen peaking out from the wooded areas.

The El Reno Regional Airport hosted the event, now in its third year, pulling in aviation fans young and old from across Canadian County and the Oklahoma City area.

The Canadian County Sheriff’s Office lost one of its own last week, as 32-year-old deputy Justin Baxter died Sept. 8 of an apparent heart attack.

Sheriff Chris West said while Baxter had not been a long-term CCSO employee, he was hard-working and well-liked.

“He was an asset to the community, to the department – Justin was committed to serving our citizens,” the sheriff said.

“He will be missed.”

For the eighth time, the U.S. Cavalry Association and Museum will host the Annual Bivouac and National Cavalry Competition at historic Fort Reno. The event will run from Sept. 21-24.

Over that four-day period, visitors to Fort Reno can watch active duty U.S. Army Cavalry units from Arizona, Texas, Kansas, Colorado, California and Oklahoma compete in a number of equine-related events.

The ultimate prize will be the battle for the Bolte Cup Championship that will crown the top unit on the final day of the event.

Susan Hicks said a vaccine clinic for cats and dogs will be held at the Northwest Community Center on Sept. 24. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Oklahoma Humane Society is sponsoring the clinic.

Hicks said it’s an effort to help the community care for animals.

Dogs should be on leashes and cats should be in carriers, Hicks said. There will be a nominal charge for the vaccines, she said.

With the recent implementation of 988, mental health advocates hope it will be easier than ever for those in crisis to reach out for help.

Formerly an 11-digit phone number, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number is now the national 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, which operates 24/7 and offers services for a variety of mental health-related calls.

Carrie Slatton-Hodges, Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services commissioner, said the helpline is a major step forward in preventing suicides in Oklahoma.
