Roads smooth riding to the fair

All roads will lead to the 68th Annual Canadian County Free Fair – and the main road will be resurfaced in time for the festivities.

The fair runs from Wednesday, Aug. 24 through Saturday, Aug. 27 at the Canadian County Expo and Event Center, 3001 Jensen Road East.

A 2.5-mile section of Jensen Road from Highway 81 to a half mile east of Radio Road is receiving an asphalt overlay to benefit people going to the fairgrounds.

Lucas kicks off town hall slate at RCC

Congressman Frank Lucas kicked off a two-day run of town hall meetings with a stop at Redlands Community College last week.

Prior to the RCC gathering, Lucas dropped into Johnnie’s Grill and visited with a group that gathers there on Wednesday mornings.

Lucas has served in the House of Representatives since 1993 and is the ranking member on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, in addition to the House Committee on Financial Services, which gave him plenty to talk about.

City to study drainage with OWRB loan

The El Reno Municipal Authority (Authority) received a $440,000 loan from the Oklahoma Water Resources Board (OWRB).

The funds will be used to complete a “comprehensive analysis of drainage systems and open channels.”

The Master Drainage Plan will be used to identify flood risk for existing and future land use conditions and for the development of Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) to mitigate future stormwater events, said information provided by OWRB.

White headed to Hall of Fame

Ask Matt White what he sees as his greatest accomplishment during the 15 years hes served as mayor of El Reno and you get a one-word answer.

Partnerships.

White, now 50, will end his run as mayor in November, but before he exits office he'll receive an honor he calls “very special.”

Embry-Riddle to hold Aerospace Career Expo

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will sponsor an Aerospace Career Expo on Sept. 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. 

Hiring managers from local and national aviation and aerospace firms and organizations will be represented at the Expo, looking to recruit talent to expand their workforce. 

Some public schools have elite prep school funding, not results

Oklahoma’s per-pupil funding for public schools typically ranks low in 50-state comparisons. But significant local property tax bases have allowed several dozen Oklahoma districts to achieve dramatically higher per-pupil funding levels.

In a significant share of those districts, per-pupil funding exceeds not only the average in Oklahoma, but also most states, and some districts have per-pupil funding that exceeds the cost of tuition at even the most expensive private school in Oklahoma.

El Reno slides into 5A-2 play with Irish jig

Sixteen batters went to the plate in the bottom of the first inning last week as El Reno High School's fast-pitch softball team kicked off District 5A-2 play with a lopsided 18-5 win over Bishop McGuinness.

The five-inning run-rule victory lifted El Reno to 3-1 on the year.
