El Reno residents are invited to lace up their sneakers and celebrate the official opening of the Sunset Trail at Lake El Reno by taking part in a family fun run on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m.

Earlier this summer, the community submitted 100 names. From the list, officials narrowed the names down to five and city council members chose the top three options.

Residents then voted on the names in a social media poll.

The final three names were Sunset Trail, Lakeview Trail and Bison Trail. Sunset Trail was voted tops.

New lights are being installed at the Ashbrook Complex ball fields and city officials say the improvements will make a world of difference.

Dill Electric of El Reno is handling the installation of the new “energy efficient LED” system, said City Manager Matt Sandidge.

“They aren’t quite finished yet, they have the west-side ball field lights to replace,” Sandidge said.

City council had earlier approved the $615,000 project, which Sandidge called “a huge upgrade for the complex and big win for El Reno and our Little League sports teams.”

Voters across Canadian Valley Technology Center’s school district will head to the polls on Tuesday, Sept. 12 to cast their ballots on a $75 million bond issue package.

If the proposal is approved, CV Tech will construct a public training center at its El Reno campus and make upgrades to its Chickasha campus.

Passage of the $75 million bond election will increase property taxes. The approximate cost will be $2.50 per month ($30 per year) for each $100,000 of assessed property value. Projected payoff of this bond issue is 15 years.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Two years after Oklahoma lawmakers passed bipartisan legislation to address the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous people, a state law enforcement entity has not secured federal funding to carry out the new law.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, in following the law, has appointed an agent to tackle these cases. But the agency would be able to do more if it had dedicated funding from the state or federal government, a tribal advocate pointed out.

The Center of Family Love (CFL), a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of those living with intellectual disabilities, is seeking applications for its 2023-24 Teen Board.

This initiative, comprised of a select group of high school students from surrounding Oklahoma schools, aims to foster a sense of community and empowerment while breaking boundaries and transforming lives.

Redlands Community College President Jena Marr recently met with Reggie Wassana, governor of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes, to sign a formal agreement designed to generate awareness of American Indian culture as well as to enhance programs that encourage and support high school students in the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes who are interested in pursuing a college degree.

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Down Syndrome Association of Central Oklahoma (DSACO) will host its 29th annual Down Syndrome Festival & 5K at the Myriad Botanical Gardens on Saturday, Sept. 30.

“We serve approximately 1,000 families in the central Oklahoma area,” said Sarah Soell, executive director of DSACO.

“This event is not only our largest fundraiser, but also meant to celebrate individuals with Down syndrome living within our community and their abilities.”

A former Okarche police officer was shot and killed in her eastern Canadian County home.

Cleveland County sheriff’s deputy Jordan Cannon was 40.

Her husband, Vaughn Cannon, 41, was booked Aug. 30 into the Canadian County Jail on a first-degree murder complaint. He also is a Cleveland County deputy.

The shooting occurred near Sara Road and SW 29th southeast of Yukon. The couple lived in southwest Oklahoma City, and Oklahoma City police are investigating the case.

Canadian County 4-H’ers received a healthy boost in donations at this year’s Canadian County Free Fair due to the donation of a dunk tank by the Oklahoma Environmental Management Authority (OEMA).

While the tank itself was donated by OEMA, the Canadian County 4-H Foundation also chipped in $500 so 4-H teen leaders could paint the tank green and add the 4-H logo to the sides.

“A dunk tank is a chair that resides over a large tank of water,” Canadian County 4-H Extension agent Todd Branson said.
