Two Canadian County departments are seeking grant funds to combat the harmful, addictive effects of opioid drugs. The Canadian County Children’s Justice Center and the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office would receive funding through the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office.

County commissioners last week approved letters of intent for both county government offices to submit opioid abatement grant award applications to the Oklahoma Opioid Abatement Board.

OKARCHE - Voters in Okarche approved a proposal to add two new trustees to town government in the Sept. 12 special election.

Voters approved the proposal for two more trustees with 109 votes, 85.83 percent in favor, to 18 votes, 14.17 percent opposed.

Currently, there are three trustees. Two positions will be added, and the existing trustees, Mayor Jeff Sadler and trustees Jason Kroener and Jeff Brueggen will decide whether the additional trustees will represent wards or serve in at-large positions.

United Way of Canadian County kicked off its annual campaign with a breakfast Sept. 15 at the Dale Robertson Center in Yukon.

The funds raised from this year’s campaign will go to support 16 partner agencies providing health and human services to Canadian County residents.

“We are thrilled to begin our 2023 campaign season,” said Craig McVay, United Way of Canadian County Advisory Board president.

“Together, we can rally for the health of local Canadian County residents with your support. There is power in giving.”

As Oklahomans have voted to implement Medicaid expansion, legalize medical marijuana and enact criminal justice reforms, the state’s method of direct democracy has drawn heightened scrutiny from the Legislature. 

OKLAHOMA CITY — The state continues to bet that it can be a national leader in the growing hydrogen sector, but officials are still waiting to find out whether Oklahoma will get a coveted federal designation and access to billions in federal funding.

OKLAHOMA CITY— Sen. Roland Pederson, R-Burlington, and Sen. Jo Anna Dossett, D-Tulsa, held an interim study last week to investigate rural development through industrial hemp production.

“This study allowed us to see what industrial opportunities there are in hemp production,” Pederson said.

El Reno will celebrate aviation as the Fourth Annual Air Show and Community Day at the El Reno Regional Airport expects to soar on Saturday, Sept. 30.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m and is free and open to the public.

Those attending will see Warbirds, classic aircraft and aerial performers as they showcase flight formations and stunts.

“The air show is a great way to introduce new generations to Oklahoma’s second largest industry,” said Bailey Flaming, airport manager.

A Warr Acres company has been awarded a $10 million contract to build a new roundabout at SH 66 and U.S. 81.

The Oklahoma Transportation Commission, at its Sept. 11 meeting, awarded a $10,030,072.14 low bid contract to Redlands Contracting LLC for the intersection modification project.

“This is going to let us really improve traffic conditions between I-40 and the intersection of U.S.-81/SH-66,” said Oklahoma Transportation Secretary Tim Gatz.

Improvements at El Reno Regional Airport are expected to continue after city leaders signed off on contracts and grant proposals aimed at upgrades for the municipal airport.

City council voted unanimously on the planned airport improvements. The action came at last week’s regular meeting.

Included in the upgrades was a resolution seeking a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration for the rehabilitation of the runway.
