El Reno High School’s girls basketball team, which won the Class 5A state title with a perfect 28-0 record, was recently honored at the Oklahoma State Capitol as guests of House of Representatives Rhonda Baker, Dick Lowe and Nick Archer.
The team was presented proclamations and senior members were invited down to the House floor.
Vehicles are rolling again across the Bridgeport Pony Bridge.
A reopening ceremony with national, state and local officials was held earlier this month to officially rededicate the rehabilitated bridge to traffic.
The iconic bridge runs along Route 66 crossing the South Canadian River at the Caddo/Canadian County line.
Visitors walked the bridge prior to the dedication, talking with ODOT officials about the work done and visiting the information kiosk in the new parking lot.
The Yukon City Council, by a 3-2 vote, fired City Manager Tammy Kretchmar.
After a three-minute executive session, Vice Mayor Jeff Wootton made a motion to terminate Kretchmar’s employment contract immediately “without cause.”
That motion was seconded by new Yukon Mayor Brian Pillmore, who was sworn in earlier in the day as the new Ward 3 council member.
Yukon residents then addressed the council in support of Kretchmar, with several warning they may face possible recall petitions if they fired her.
The Canadian County Sheriff’s Office will host its annual law enforcement memorial service at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 28.
The memorial service will be conducted on the east side of the sheriff’s office near the courthouse entrance, where the memorial stone is located.
The deputies and their families being remembered are Deputy Sam Farris, 1894; Sgt. Gary Garrison, 2014; Lt. Shirley Lanning, 2020; and Deputy Justin Baxter, 2022.
In recognition of their dedication, expertise and commitment to excellence, several members of the Redlands Community College faculty and staff have been honored as Outstanding Faculty and Staff by their colleagues.
“We are fortunate to have exceptional faculty and staff, and I’m thrilled to recognize outstanding individuals each semester,” said Redlands President Jena Marr.
The deadline to request absentee ballots by mail is approaching. Applications must be received by the Canadian County Election Board no later than 5 p.m. Monday, June 3.
County election board secretary Allen Arnold said absentee voting is available to all voters and applications can be submitted several ways.
“In Oklahoma, no excuse is needed to vote by absentee ballot, and it’s easy to apply. Voters can submit their application online, in-person, by fax, mail or even email,” said Arnold.
Gov. Kevin Stitt and House lawmakers, led by House Speaker Charles McCall, have endorsed putting Oklahoma’s personal income tax on a path to zero. Under that plan, Oklahoma’s personal income tax rate would be reduced by a quarter-point every time the state has a surplus of $400 million or more.
The state’s top tax rate is currently 4.75 percent.
Opponents have argued for maintaining the current tax rate and boosting state spending in various areas instead.

El Reno High School held graduation ceremonies on Saturday.
The event packed Memorial Stadium and featured 254 graduates, one of the largest graduating classes in school history.

El Reno Fire Chief Jason Duff and Police Chief Ken Brown said there were no reports of damage in the area from the storms.
El Reno sounded the tornado sirens as the storm moved through the area, dumping varied sizes of hail.
