Beating the summer heat

El Reno opened its municipal swimming pool for the summer this week.

Mike Booher will again serve as pool manager. Last week he assembled his lifeguard crew for a last-minute walk-through and some final touch-ups before the pool in Legion Park opened for the summer.

Booher said pool hours will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Holiday hours are noon to 5 p.m.

Kansas City drum repaired by C&A artists

Body

Relationships more than 10 years in the making led to the Kansas City Chiefs giant drum ending up temporarily in the Canadian County living room of Cheyenne and Arapaho artist George Levi.

Now the converted stock tank is back at Arrowhead Stadium, its once-torn rawhide cover patched with a piece of bison leather from a bull raised on tribal land.

Republicans agree to budget framework

Oklahoma’s Republican legislative leaders agreed last week to a budget framework that will result in approximately $12.5 billion in spending in fiscal year 2025, which starts July 1.

Lawmakers will consider budget bills in the next few days, as staff work late hours to finalize the language and numbers. The session ends May 31.

C&A Tribes hold annual MMIP event

With photos clutched in their hands and signs hanging on vehicles, families and friends of missing and murdered loved ones gathered to remember and honor their loved ones.

The Fourth Annual Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP) awareness event and parade was held earlier this month at Concho.

The annual event, hosted by the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes MMIP Chapter, brings a spotlight on the tribal citizens who have either gone missing or have been murdered, some with cases still unsolved.

Trio seeks District 2 commish seat from retiring Anderson

Body

An interesting race is developing as three candidates – two of them current Canadian County employees - look to succeed a retiring county commissioner.

Laramie Bryant, Josh Davis and Lacey Dawson want to replace longtime District 2 Commissioner David Anderson of Mustang. Both Davis and Dawson work for Canadian County.

Anderson is leaving office in December after deciding not to seek a fifth, four year-term.

More than 1,000 fans flocked to the Denny/Crump Arena to watch the 12th Annual Mustache Bach.

The pro bull riding event came to El Reno for a third straight year.
