Canadian County Sheriff Chris West spent three days this spring in El Paso, Texas. He was there as part of a group of lawmen from across the country to see firsthand what was happening at the U.S. southern border. 

The visiting lawmen met with representatives from the Southwest Border Sheriffs and Texas Border Sheriffs Association to discuss what was described as an “ongoing debacle” – and national security situation at the southern border.

Canadian County’s fairgrounds venue saw a 52.4 percent increase in event bookings for the recently concluded fiscal year.

The number of events presented at the Expo and Event Center grew from 42 in FY23 to 64 in FY24. Rental income from those events also increased in the year-over-year comparison, although at a lesser rate.

Income from event bookings totaled $320,225 for FY24 – up 7.3 percent over FY23 at $298,536. That compares to $225,500 in FY22.

SH 152 lane closures force various detours

All lanes of east and westbound SH-152 will be closed between US-81 and Banner Road near Union City through winter as crews begin a major reconstruction of the road. 

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation said drivers can use US-81 to I-40 to SH-4 or US-81 to SH-37 to SH-4 as a detour.  

ODOT said this is the first phase of a nearly $40 million project that will resurface, add shoulders and improve driver sight distance for nearly 10 miles of SH-152 between US-81 near Union City and Mustang.

County offices begin shuffling locations

A shuffling of Canadian County offices is under way, which will ultimately relocate the county’s family justice center for domestic abuse survivors to Yukon.

Cardinal Point and its resource partners will occupy what has - since the early 1990s - been the Canadian County Health Department’s Yukon office, 1023 E. Vandament.

Canadian County commissioners approved an agreement with the contractor, Redhawk Construction to remodel office space in the building.

Lawmakers to tackle youth vaping, cellphones during school

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma senators during the interim are expected to take a deep dive into cellphones in schools, voucher costs and other topics.

Senate President Pro Tem Greg Treat, R-Oklahoma City, approved 39 interim study requests. The requests have been assigned to committees.

The committee chairperson will determine whether or not the study will proceed.

Senate interim studies are expected to be concluded by Nov. 1.

Members of the El Reno Fire Department’s Water Rescue Team were able to safely locate a missing 13-year-old female on Lake El Reno over the weekend.

According to Fire Chief Jason Duff, the girl was riding a personal watercraft that had become disabled.

The girl was located floating on the north end of the lake near the rocks at the bottom of the dam, according to firefighters on the scene.

The girl and the craft were towed back to the safety of the boat ramp, said Duff.

El Reno native on panel to talk film ‘The Three Guardsmen’

The famed frontier lawman is buried at the Frisco Cemetery, nestled between El Reno and Yukon.

He is remembered as one of The Three Guardsmen.

His name is Chris Madsen.

Dee Cordry, an El Reno native and a retired agent with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, is a historian who wrote the book, “Alive if Possible … Dead if Necessary,” in 2005 about Chris Madsen, Bill Tilghman and Heck Thomas, the frontier lawmen known as The Three Guardsmen. He has recently been interviewed for an OETA documentary also called “The Three Guardsmen.”
