A statement from Mark Nelson
President, Oklahoma Fraternal Order of Police 

With the permission of the Duran family, and at the request of Chief Brown and the El Reno Fraternal Order of Police, I want to update everyone who has been praying and sending well wishes for Sgt. Thomas Duran, a 14-year veteran of the El Reno Police Department.

Sgt. Duran has not passed. We continue to pray for a miracle, but ultimately, we trust that God is in control. He is still under the care of wonderful doctors, nurses and medical staff at OU Medical Center.

Unfortunately, Thomas’ condition continues to decline, and his family is faced with making difficult decisions.

As an organ donor, Thomas selflessly chose to give the gift of life to others in need. His family has made the courageous and compassionate decision to honor his wishes. Sgt. Duran lives by the mantra of “Saved not Soft.”

His trust in Christ is helping in this unthinkable situation.

We ask for prayers of comfort, guidance and peace for the family during this incredibly difficult time. Respectfully, they deserve and will need some privacy in the days ahead as they deal with this terrible incident.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news about Sgt. Thomas Duran. In the line of duty, Sgt. Duran exemplified the true spirit of public safety and service. His dedication to our community will never be forgotten.

We ask our community to join us in offering prayers of comfort, guidance, and peace for his family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. Out of respect, please allow them the privacy they deserve in the days ahead as they navigate this heartbreaking loss.
