El Reno’s Gifts for the Yanks celebrates 80th birthday with more than 350 gift bags for hospitalized veterans

During World War II, comedian Eddie Cantor began raising money for Christmas gifts to be sent to American military members hospitalized in England.

Over the 80 years since, the holiday drive kept going through the efforts of American Legion posts around the United States as well as high school students.

El Reno High School and American Legion Post 34 Auxiliary have been supporting the program from the outset and celebrated the 80th anniversary by raising $12,207 to purchase gifts for the men and women at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Oklahoma City.

CASA jingles and mingles its way into the holidays

Canadian County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) annual volunteer appreciation Christmas Jingle & Mingle was held last week at Christ’s Church of Yukon.

Executive Director Dana Lutz said the event helps the organization reach even more children. 

“We host the annual holiday party as an appreciation for our volunteers,” Lutz said.

“We provide gifts for the children on their caseload. If we have extras, they go to children in DHS (Department of Human Services) custody that don’t have a CASA volunteer.”

County bridge project approved

A bridge project serving the Banner community in Canadian County District 1 is due to be finished next spring.

The new bridge and approaches will be constructed along Banner Road over Purcell Creek just north of Highway 66.

County commissioners, at their weekly meeting Dec. 15, approved claim forms authorizing the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) to pay for services associated with this project.

Oklahoma takes new steps to host multimillion-dollar spaceplane at Burns Flat

The Oklahoma Aerospace and Aeronautics Commission voted Wednesday to allocate $490,900 to designs for a spacecraft hangar.

The commission’s decision comes after the state’s $17 million agreement with international space company Dawn Aerospace was approved earlier this year. The uncrewed plane is suborbital and can be used for life science research and defense.
