Indians tennis squads serve up mixed tourney results

El Reno High School’s tennis team found mixed results last week during tournament play, led by a pair of top five finishes in the Western Heights Invitational.

Playing at the Earlywine Tennis Center, El Reno’s top doubles team of Bri Barksdale and Jayna Graham earned fourth. The Indians No.2 doubles team of Kambry Maifield and Alyssa Watson finished second.

Union City hits 20-win mark; Calumet downed by Okarche

Two doubles each from Alexis Archer and Mackinzie DeLong helped Union City High School’s slow-pitch softball team reach a season milestone last week with a 16-0 win over Harding Charter Prep.

The Tigers have won five of their last six games to hit the 20-win plateau at 20-10. The other victories were over Crooked Oak (15-2), Cement (18-2), Waukomis (11-3) and Class A’s 12th-ranked Fort Cobb/Broxton (13-12).

The loss in the stretch was a 14-2 decision to Class 4A’s 20th-ranked Hinton.

Calumet, Union City log victories

Coming off a third-place finish in the recent Lookeba-Sickles Invitational, Calumet High School’s baseball team picked up its second straight victory last week with a 12-3 decision over Binger-Oney.

The Chieftains, ranked No.17 this week in the latest Class A poll, moved to 12-3 on the spring with the win over the Bobcats.

Calumet posted a 2-1 tournament mark after a 13-3 win over Class A’s 16th-ranked Shattuck in the third-place game. The other victory was over Elk City’s JV squad (10-9) and the loss was a 4-0 shutout to the host, ranked ninth in Class B.

Cougars finish fifth in Maxwell Berning Classic

In its final tune-up before the NJCAA Southwest District Championships, Redlands Community College’s golf team placed fifth last week in the 2022 Susie Maxwell Berning Classic.

Played on the West Course at Lincoln Park in Oklahoma City, Redlands carded a 23-over 614 score for 36 holes. The rounds of 303 and 311 placed the Cougars as the second highest community college entered behind Iowa Western, which tied for third at 604.

Ashlyn Acosta led Redlands with a 148 (73/75) tally which tied her for sixth in the individual medalist chase.

RCC drops pair to Raiders

After splitting a four-game series against South Arkansas College in NJCAA Region 2, Division 2 action, Redlands Community College’s baseball team jumped up to Division 1 to take on Rose State College.

The Cougars dropped both games against the Raiders by scores of 18-4 and 14-4 to slip to 17-27 on the spring. Redlands is 6-14 in the Division 2 chase after losing 13-10 and 15-9 to the Stars but rebounding for wins by scores of 11-10 and 21-8.

The Cougars were 50-of-164 (.305) from the plate over the six-game stretch, logging 15 doubles, five triples and seven home runs.

Sacred Heart event raises over $125,000

Sacred Heart Catholic School celebrated the 25th Annual Taste of Sacred Heart event April 2 and organizers said more than $125,000 was raised for the small parochial school.

Normally held in the school gymnasium, the event moved for the second consecutive year outdoors to the Denny-Crump Rodeo Arena.

Longtime El Reno auctioneer Ken Reding presided over the live auction, offering supporters a variety of items to bid on, from student-created classroom projects to lavish trips that included a stay at a winery in Barcelona, Spain, to tours of the Vatican in Italy.
