El Reno’s Oklahoma Trapshooting Association Park, located off Jensen Road, played host to the 2022 Oklahoma Scholastic Shooting Sports Program’s State Shoot last week.

El Reno was one of many high schools to qualify a team and individual shooters for the event.

Commissioner races form after early candidate filings

Body

As of Thursday morning, two races had developed for Canadian County commission seats, while one candidate each had filed for the treasurer and assessor positions.

Incumbent Marc Hader, 58, of Yukon filed for District 1 County Commissioner as did Tom Manske, 54, Yukon. Both filed as Republicans.

The District 3 Commissioner District had two candidates file. Tracey Rider, 60, of El Reno filed as a Republican as did Robert Merrick, 38, of Yukon.

Sacred Heart Catholic School students wave to El Reno firemen as they drive off after giving the all-clear for students to return to classes.

A fire alarm at the El Reno school forced the evacuation of students to a nearby playground.

Two ERFD units responded to the alarm and after inspection, no fire or smoke was found.

Commissioners ask judge to rule in their favor on flash flood suit

Body

Canadian County commissioners have asked a judge to rule in their favor in a lawsuit alleging property damage caused during flash flooding nearly three years ago.

An attorney for Rhonda Steenbergen, Donald Erwin and a minor filed the civil suit on Sept. 9, 2019, in Canadian County District Court alleging negligence by the commissioners and county contractors in a road construction project.

The plaintiffs are seeking to recover damages that occurred to their Jensen Road property during heavy rains in May and June 2019.

Okarche High Speech Team places third at state

Body

Members of the Okarche High School Speech Team brought home the Class 3A fourth-place sweepstakes plaque from the state speech and debate tournament held recently on the campus of the University of Oklahoma.

Okarche was only three points away from second place and one point out of third in a close competition that saw Riverfield Country Day School take first, Cherokee, second, and Haskell, third.

OHS had two students crowned state champions - senior McKenzie Stewart in poetry and freshman Zoe Palmer in prose.

Teenage inmate charged in jail fire

Body

A teen accused of a killing continues to be a “problem inmate” after allegedly setting a fire inside the Canadian County Jail.

Javier Devonte Lewis, 19, was charged April 7 with first-degree arson in Canadian County District Court. The felony crime is punishable by up to 35 years in prison and/or a maximum $25,000 fine.

Lewis was formally charged in connection with a fire on Sunday afternoon, March 27 at the county jail, 304 N. Evans.
