RCC leapfrogs Western into third

With three games left in the regular season, Redlands Community College women’s basketball team made the jump into third place in the NJCAA Region 2 standings with a 70-56 win over Western Oklahoma.

The Cougars are on an eight-game win streak to improve to 23-4 on the season. Redlands is 10-3 in the region standings and trails Northeastern Oklahoma A&M by a game for second and Murray State by two games for first.

The win over Western avenged a January loss to the Pioneers as Haven Joseph put up a team-leading line of 20 points, eight boards and three steals.

Hunt paces Cougars to road victory

Camren Hunt scored a team-leading 18 points as Redlands Community College men’s basketball team remains in a tie for seventh place in the NJCAA Region 2 standings with a 75-67 win over Western Oklahoma.

The Cougars snapped a two-game losing streak with the eight-point road win and swept the regular-season series over the Pioneers.

Redlands is now 11-16 on the season and 5-8 in Region 2 action.

Hunt was one of three players with double-digit scoring and added four rebounds and two steals.

Junior Livestock Show returns to Expo Center

Nearly 200 4-H and FFA members from across Canadian County will participate in the 54th Annual Canadian County Spring Livestock Show at the Canadian County Expo Center, 3001 Jensen Road East.

The Feb. 20-27 event serves as a county-level showcase ahead of the Oklahoma Youth Expo in mid-March and continues a decades-long tradition of youth involvement in agriculture.

Black History event Saturday

The El Reno Carnegie Library is sponsoring a Black History Brunch on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 11 a.m. at the Northwest Community Center.

This event invites the community to come together in honoring and exploring the profound history and contributions of Black Oklahomans.

Those attending will enjoy a welcoming atmosphere with tea and light refreshments served throughout the brunch.

The highlight of the event will be a keynote presentation by Anita Arnold, a respected historian and community leader from Oklahoma City.

Council approves free walk-through ordinance program

Last year, the City of El Reno cited 28 dwellings for safety issues, 23 of them had electrical problems. 

So said Emily Richey, director of Planning and Services for the City of El Reno. 

Richey was speaking at the recent city council meeting. She was explaining how the city wanted to implement a free program intended to help prevent non-compliant remodeling projects before they were started. 

Richey’s proposal was unanimously approved by the council. The ordinance is known as the Pre-Construction Safety Review. It is voluntary and free of charge. 

Four Old Broads begins six-show Centre Theatre run

Centre Theatre for the Arts will present Four Old Broads, a laugh-out-loud comedy directed by Phillip Church. Performances run Feb. 20, 21, 27 and 28 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 22 and March 1 at 2 p.m.

Written by Leslie Kimbell, Four Old Broads follows four spirited residents of a retirement home who refuse to fade quietly into the background. When their peaceful routines are disrupted, these feisty friends take matters into their own hands - leading to outrageous antics, sharp wit and plenty of heart.

City featured in report showing impact of route-based tourism

The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City has published a new report examining how small towns have successfully used route-based tourism as a valuable strategy for economic development.

The report, titled “The Byways Report: The Scenic Route to Rural Prosperity” frames the issue through the 100th anniversary of Route 66, the epic 2,448-mile road trip that crosses eight states from Chicago to Los Angeles.

Four of those states – Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico – lie in the Tenth Federal Reserve District, which the Kansas City Fed serves.

Redlands spring enrollment jumps over 10 percent from 2025

Redlands Community College continues to attract students seeking a degree that prepares them for the workforce or gives them a good foundation for pursuing a bachelor’s degree.

Since the summer of 2023, Redlands has seen a consistent increase in enrollment, including this spring semester which has a total headcount exceeding 2,300 students for an 11.4 percent increase over spring 2025.

“We are thrilled with another semester of growth in enrollment,” said Redlands President Jena Marr.
