El Reno cagers snag Warriors golden loot

ANADARKO - A steal and a coast-to-coast layup by Nazhoni Sleeper sent El Reno High School’s girls basketball team on the path to a wire-to-wire win over the host team in the championship game of the 2024 Anadarko Warriors Classic.

El Reno’s 40-23 victory over the Warriors, ranked second in the state in Class 4A, moved the Indians to 10-0 on the season.

Jennifer Douglas’ team reached the finals with wins over Capitol Hill (69-11) and Cache (67-29).

ANADARKO – Scoring from both in the paint and from the 3-point line, El Reno High School’s boys basketball team used a 16-12 break in the first period to kick-start its defense of the championship from the 2024 Anadarko Warriors Classic.

El Reno defeated Anadarko, ranked sixth in Class 4A, 60-38 for its fourth straight win.

The Indians improved to 8-2 on the season and secured the Warriors Classic title for a second straight year.

In its fourth dual of the season against a ranked opponent, El Reno High School’s wrestling team dropped a series of matches early and late in a close 41-36 loss to Class 5A’s 12th-ranked Guthrie.

The loss dropped the Indians, ranked ninth in the same poll, to 3-3 on the year.

“Lost some matches we shouldn’t,” said El Reno head coach Anthony McDonald.

El Reno started out in a 14-0 bind as Terry Guzman (113) and Cash Reyes (120) dropped matches by a combined score of 23-5. The Indians got their first win from Foxx Kurtz (126) via a 2:43 fall over Colten Stevens.

Deputy injured on I-40

A Canadian County Sheriff’s deputy standing outside his patrol pickup was struck by a vehicle early Friday, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.

About 7:30 a.m. Jan. 5, the deputy – whose name was not immediately released – made a traffic stop in the westbound lanes of Interstate 40 near Garth Brooks Boulevard.

Another driver of a pickup hit the deputy’s patrol truck and hit the deputy, causing him multiple injuries.

The deputy was taken from the scene by ambulance to a local hospital.

The effort to preserve the old Canadian County Jail will be highlighted in a webinar hosted by the State Historic Preservation Office on Wednesday, Jan. 10, starting at noon. The featured speaker is Amy Neathery with Preservation El Reno.

The jail was finished in 1907, a few months before Oklahoma became the 46th state. It cost $18,000 to build. The jail served the county for 78 years.

The presentation will focus on the jail’s history, including several design features that made it unique when it opened in 1907 and are still unique today.

Yukon man faces obstruction charge following encounter in sheriff lobby

A Yukon man who claimed in a viral YouTube video that he was wrongfully arrested in September in the lobby of the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office now faces a misdemeanor charge related to the incident.

Charles Edward “Trey” Bishop III, 48, was arrested in El Reno at the sheriff’s office lobby on Sept. 15, 2023, on a complaint of obstruction as he witnessed an arrest of a woman who was also in the lobby. Bishop said he was arrested when he told a deputy to be nice while making the arrest of the woman.

Bishop’s arrest was caught on video and has been released on YouTube.
