Rother, Brothers lift their teams in third-place rallies

Jadyn Rother scored a team-high 26 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, as Okarche High School’s girls basketball team defeated Watonga 59-38 in the third-place game of the 2024 Three Rivers Conference Championship.

Despite going 2-1 in the event, beating Crescent (66-20) and falling to Fairview (52-45), the Warriors dropped out of the most recent Class A poll. Okarche, now 7-6 on the season, was ranked 18th at the start of the three-game set.

Calumet, Okarche secure first tourney titles of ’24

Undefeated Calumet High School’s boys basketball team continues to churn out both the points and the victories after averaging 74 points per outing over the three-game set leading to the championship from the 2024 Alex Longhorns Classic.

The top-ranked team in Class B extended its regular-season winning streak, dating back to last season, to 35 in a row after beating Wynnewood 87-45 in the first round.

RCC avenges home loss

Ashlyn Evans-Thompson knocked down a trio of 3-pointers to lead Redlands Community College women’s basketball team to a 53-50 road win over Texas-based Frank Phillips College.

The Redlands victory over the Plainsmen avenged an earlier loss as the Cougars improved to 10-3 on the season with their second straight win.

Evans-Thompson went 6-of-12 from the field and led all Redlands scorers with 15 points.

She added three rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Cougars log 85-72 win

Redlands Community College men’s basketball team kicked off the new year by jumping back into the win column with an 85-72 victory over Texas-based Loyalty College Prep.

The Cougars improved to 8-6 on the season with the win.

Redlands had four players score in double digits, led by Deazhon Perkins with 22 points off 9-of-17 shooting, three of those coming from the 3-point arc. He added five rebounds, five steals and three assists.

Saving old jail, holidays top fourth quarter news

Editor’s Note: The final three months of 2023 saw groups working to save an historic jail, expand a treasured war memorial, honor successful El Reno High School alumni and help those less fortunate in the community.

A nonprofit group got the green light from Canadian County commissioners to try and save the historic county jail.

Preservation El Reno presented a proposal to commissioners to make repairs and upgrades to the old jail site at 300 N. Evans.

CCSO deputy struck on I-40, slated for surgery on Monday

A Canadian County sheriff’s deputy is in stable condition after being struck by a vehicle Friday while standing outside his vehicle.

Sheriff Chris West said Deputy Jose Tayahua-Mendoza, 46, of Mustang, was injured around 8 a.m. when a vehicle veered off the interstate and struck a vehicle the deputy had stopped along I-40 and Garth Brooks Boulevard. Mendoza was taken to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, where he is in stable condition. West said the deputy suffered arm, leg and foot injuries. He was scheduled to have surgery Monday on an ankle and arm, the sheriff said.

Added details emerge from arrest inside sheriff office lobby

More details have been released in an obstruction of a law officer case against a Yukon-area man who was arrested last September in the lobby of the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office.

Canadian County resident Charles Edward Bishop III had gone to the sheriff’s office on Sept. 15 to request records on a former sheriff’s deputy when he got involved in an unexpected fracas.

Gorham to serve as new Lt. governor for C&A Tribes

Gov. Reggie Wassana has selected Hershel Gorham to serve as lieutenant governor of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes. Gorham will step into the role to fill the vacancy left by the sudden death in September of C&A Lt. Gov. Gib Miles.

He was sworn in during the tribes inauguration Jan. 6 at the Frisco Center in Clinton.
