State’s high court hears challenge to property tax initiative petition

OKLAHOMA CITY – An initiative petition seeking to eliminate some property taxes violates the Oklahoma Constitution on several fronts, the state’s high court was told.

The Oklahoma Supreme Court held oral arguments challenging an initiative petition, State Question 843, that critics say would reduce revenue to schools by more than $1 billion by exempting homesteads from property taxes.

Paxton praises Stitt on signing foster care bill

OKLAHOMA CITY — Senate Pro Tem Lonnie Paxton, R-Tuttle, applauded Gov. Kevin Stitt for signing Senate Bill 1806, legislation extending foster care services from age 18 to 21.

Paxton said the new law will help provide stability and support for young adults transitioning into adulthood.

Indians sweep U.S. 81 diamond battles with Chickasha

Coy Atkins doubled in Gage Lesperance in the top of the fifth inning to break a 4-all tie as El Reno High School’s summer baseball team remains undefeated with a 5-4 road win over Chickasha.

The one-run win over the Chicks moved El Reno to 2-0. It’s the first of two non-league meetings with Chickasha in June.

El Reno was 4-0 after two days with wins over Dibble, Bethany, Community Christian and Leedy.

Charges filed in deaths from wrong-way collision

The Canadian County District Attorney has filed formal charges against the man accused of killing four young people in a wrong-way collision on I-40.

Michael Salomon Rosario-Cruz, 26, faces four counts of second-degree murder, carrying a firearm while under the influence and transporting an open container of an intoxicating beverage. 

He is being held in the Canadian County Jail. 

Rosario-Cruz is charged in the deaths of Quincy Jones, 19, Haliegh Salazar, 18, and Brad Palmer, 18, all of El Reno and Kiercy Hickson, 20, of Stillwater.
