Funding for four-story courthouse disclosed

Canadian County commissioners dedicated more than $11.4 million in federal COVID stimulus funds toward development of a new county courthouse campus.

Commissioners approved a memorandum of understanding and dedication of funds to Canadian County’s Public Facilities Authority for construction of the four-story courthouse at 200 N. Choctaw.

The total amount dedicated includes $10 million in “lost revenue” that was part of the $28.8 million awarded in 2021 to Canadian County as part of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

Indians drop summer finale to Weatherford

El Reno High’s baseball team closed out its first summer independent schedule with a 12-7 setback to Weatherford.

The squad, made up of varsity and junior varsity players, went 12-of-34 (.353) from the plate with two extra base hits. Mason Fulton logged a double for his lone hit in four at bats, while Gage Lesperance hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third.

Dawson Davidson (3-for-4) and Garrett March (3-for-3) paced the hitting and combined for a run scored and another batted in.

Calumet falls in RDL shootout to Bethany 15-14

Body

Despite logging 10 hits, Calumet High School’s baseball team closed out the summer schedule with a 15-14 shootout loss to Bethany in Red Dirt League action.

The Chieftains closed out its first season in the RDL with a 5-1 record, while the loss to the Broncos dropped the team’s overall record for the summer to 8-2-1.

“I think it (RDL) was good for the guys. We were able to get those kids that don’t play travel ball 10 to 20 at bats that they needed and we got our pitcher that we needed to throw the innings we wanted.

Ezell’s celebrates 60 years in El Reno

Ezell’s Refrigeration has been keeping the El Reno area comfortable for decades. The family-owned and operated business celebrated its 60th anniversary in June. 

Terry Ezell’s late father, Wayne Ezell, founded the business in 1964. Along the way the Ezell family has continued to offer professional service, backed up by the well-known Carrier brand.

Tanks removed

Body

A crew from Environmental Works Inc. pulled old gasoline tanks at 300 S. Rock Island this week.

City Manager Matt Sandidge said the city received a $90,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, administered though the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, for the work.

The city purchased the long-vacant building several months ago.

Sandidge said the tanks had to be pulled before any type of development could be pursued at the site.

Fans donated to assist in hot weather

Oklahoma Gas & Electric Company (OG&E) recently donated electric fans to El Reno area seniors and families with low income to help residents stay safe and cool during the hot summer months.

In early June, OG&E volunteers handed out 50 fans in El Reno to those who may be at higher risk for heat-related injury and illness. OG&E partnered with Blessing Baskets, a local nonprofit organization that serves vulnerable populations.
