ER business owners hope film serves as tourist draw

With the release of the new Twisters movie, downtown business owners are hopeful it will attract new customers after closing their shops to allow film crews to use their spaces.

Scenes filmed in the downtown area in the summer of 2023 forced the closure of several businesses. And while they were reimbursed for their lost business, there are still some mixed emotions.

On the bright side, businesses are hopeful the newfound exposure created by the movie will draw more people to the downtown area.

After 16-year journey, C&A celebrate El Reno property being added to Trust

For years, the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes have worked to have property south of I-40 and just east of Country Club Road made part of Tribal Trust Land. 

That work paid off as the just more than 93 acres have been officially designated C&A Trust property.  The U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) placed the land, known as the Denny property, into trust for the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes during a ceremony last week.

Imagination Library reaches local milestone

Wesley United Methodist Church and El Reno Carnegie Library partnered in 2023 to bring Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to El Reno.

This month, a milestone was hit as the 10,000th book will arrive in an El Reno mailbox. 

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is an international program that provides free books to children from birth to age 5.

Registered children receive an age-appropriate book each month, delivered straight to their home.

There is no cost or other requirement to receive the books.

Oklahoma couple restore Twister’s iconic ‘Jo’ truck

How do you wear out a compact disc of the 1996 blockbuster movie Twister? It’s a one-word answer for Jessica and Tim Stegner.

“Research,” said Jessica.

The Guthrie couple are owners of one of two remaining trucks used in the original movie.

“I don’t know how many times for sure we watched the movie but we wore out the first DVD. I tried to play it a few months ago and it would not work,” said Tim.

The 1984 Jeep J10 Honcho was in El Reno for the special screening of Twisters, the long-awaited sequel to the original action flick.

Couple to celebrate 60th anniversary

Bruce and Deanna (Stepp) Carroll will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.

They were married July 25, 1964, at Trinity Baptist Church with Rev. Jack James officiating.

The couple have three children, Tammy and Joe Garrett, Tracy Carroll and Kevin and Kalen Carroll, six grandchildren, Zackary and Broghan Garrett, Zane and Kaitlyn Garrett, Kaydee Garrett, Garrett and Paris Carroll, Chandler Carroll and Brittney Carroll Wilson, as well as seven great-grandchildren, Colton and Everly Garrett, Kobe and Shiloh Garrett, Reese and Rose Carroll and Hayden Carroll.

ER Wranglers hold cookout

The El Reno Wranglers held their annual cookout recently at Adams Park.

Members discussed the upcoming rodeo set for Aug. 2 and 3 at the Denny-Crump Arena.

The club welcomed new members, the Sears family and the Phillips family.

Next regular meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 8 at the 4-H building.
