A busy November general election is expected with the U.S. presidential race heading the ballots.

In Canadian County, more than 300 residents have completed election precinct worker training as preparations are made to staff 55 polling places.

“We’re always looking for people,” said Canadian County Election Board Secretary Allen Arnold. 

Canadian County now has 102,969 registered voters, with a strong majority of them Republicans. Interestingly, there are now almost as many registered Independents as Democrats in the county.

The Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes have been officially designated Purple Heart Tribes.

Ambassador Nancy Salsman for Military Order of the Purple Heart made the presentation to C&A during last week’s 34th Annual Indian Nation Powwow held at Concho. The event is also the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma’s annual summer festival.

The Canadian County Continuous Improvement Committee is hosting a Back-to-School Supply Drive to benefit the schools of Canadian County. 

Hannah Harris, an employee of the Canadian County Election Board and a member of the committee, said the effort is intended to collect donations such as shampoo, soap, socks and feminine products so the schools can give them out as needed during the year. 

Donations are accepted at any Canadian County government office as well as the Dale Robertson Center in Yukon and the Mustang Community Center. 

Four people died Tuesday afternoon in a small airplane crash near Sundance Airport in far east Canadian County. The crash happened near Sara Road and NW 150th.

About 1:30 p.m., Oklahoma City firefighters responded to a potential aircraft accident near the 13000 block of North Sara Road.

While en route, the crew reported seeing a plume of smoke rising from the area. Upon arrival, fire crews found a plane on fire in a wooded area just east of the runway. Firefighters extinguished the flames and discovered that all four people on board had perished. 

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27 for the Runoff Primary Election, City of Oklahoma City Special Election, City of Piedmont Special Election and the Hinton School Bond Election.

Canadian County Election Board Secretary Allen Arnold offers tips to voters, especially those who will be casting a ballot for the first time.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Science, Space and Technology Committee Chairman Frank Lucas and Congressman Max Miller (OH-07) introduced H.R. 9219, the Weather Data Taxpayer Protection Act. 

Lucas, R-Cheyenne, said the legislation is a critical step in improving the accuracy and reliability of weather prediction by ensuring weather tools, purchased with taxpayer funds, are more accurate, standardized, and able to account for ever-changing weather risks.

A second youth educator has joined the team at Canadian County’s Cooperative Extension Service.

Caleigh Gay is the latest 4-H youth development educator at the Canadian County OSU Extension Center, 218 N. Country Club Road.

Extension Director Kyle Worthington introduced Gay last week to the county commissioners.

“She is filling our second youth development position,” Worthington said.

“We’re glad that she’s here on the staff with us.”

Members of the AE Chapter of P.E.O. met recently at a local coffee shop for their August meeting.

Attending were Christy Eichholz, Margaret Price, Lindsey Vise, Karen Rushing, Janan Fletcher, Ann Zavy, Holly Eaton and Becky Reuter.

Janice Jensen served as hostess.

Vise read minutes from the previous meeting.

Eichholz informed members the new yearbooks will be ready soon and will be dropped off or mailed before the next meeting.
