Grant puts $1.2 million under the feet of downtown face-lift

Recent repairs to sidewalks in downtown El Reno are apparently just the beginning. Last week the city learned it had landed a more than $1 million grant to make major improvements to the area.

City Manager Matt Sandidge made the announcement at the conclusion of the regular meeting of the city council. He said he had just been informed El Reno was one of the grant winners.

Sandidge said the grant is funded through the state and is the first of several the city plans to apply for as downtown revitalization has become a priority for the municipal government.

In a mirror-image of day one results, El Reno High School’s fast-pitch softball team dominated Lawton MacArthur before having its season end with a shutout loss to rival Guthrie in the Class 5A, Region 1 Championships.

El Reno ousted the Highlanders from the playoffs for a second straight season with a 16-4 victory in an elimination game.

That moved the Indians into the championship round against Guthrie needing to beat the Bluejays twice to make state for the first time since 2021.
