Filing period for school district races opens Dec. 2

Candidate filing for Board of Education offices begins Monday, Dec. 2 for 11 Canadian County school districts. 

Those who wish to file for a Board of Education office must submit a Declaration of Candidacy to the Canadian County Election Board Dec. 2, 3 or 4, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Candidate filing packets are available on the state election board website at https://oklahoma.gov/elections/candidates/candidate-filing.html and at the county election board. 

Scouting for Food Drive

Earlier this month, El Reno Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts scoured the community for the annual Scouts Food Drive.

The effort helps stock the shelves at The Lord’s Harvest, the local nonprofit ministry founded and operated by Nikki Pruitt.

The collection this year brought in close to 600 pounds of nonperishable food items. The drive is coordinated by Beth Griesel.

The countdown is on! It’s less than a week away from Thanksgiving.

I still have a lot to do, like getting the laundry off the dining room table so we have a place to sit! I have laundry issues. My biggest issue is that I’m the only one actually doing the laundry! LOL! 

Calumet trio place in AFR speech contest

Three Calumet students placed in their respective categories at the American Farmers and Ranchers Southwest District Speech Contest held recently in Cache.

Merritt Major placed first in the Novice AFR/OFU category, while Alice Park placed first in the Intermediate AFR/OFU category and Bella Dean took third in the Intermediate Agri-Science category.

Lamplighters OHCE collect throws for sheriff’s office

Lamplighters OHCE of Canadian County met recently in the home of Donna Wehmuller.

Carol Stine called the meeting to order, with Patricia Morrison reading a devotional titled “In All Circumstances.” 

Maxine Little read minutes from the last meeting, while Morrison gave the treasury report.

Wehmuller presented the leader lesson on “When to Hire a Lawyer.” 

Members brought blanket throws to give to the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office to be given to people in crisis situations.

Canadian County owners receive Centennial Farm Award

OKLAHOMA CITY — Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer Lynda Ozan announced that an Oklahoma Centennial Farm Award has been presented to the owners of a Canadian County farm.

Frank and Janice Hurst own the Hurst-Patch Farm located in the vicinity of El Reno. The family has grown wheat and hay and raised cattle on the land since great-uncle Charles R. Patch settled the land in 1891.
