El Reno Now is starting off the year with an awards-type banquet aimed at celebrating the many successes found throughout the community. The event will feature Gov. Kevin Stitt as the keynote speaker.

On Jan. 16, state officials, public school leaders, community volunteers and citizens from all walks of life will meet at the Palace Event Center on Banner Road.

The banquet will bring the community together to look back at the accomplishments of 2019, as well as take a glimpse into the future, said the city of El Reno’s Heather Brothers.

Clutch free throws from Moore seal two-point win for Indians in thriller

Body

Darius Moore made only two free throws in last week’s game with Elgin to kick off the 2020 portion of El Reno High School’s boys basketball schedule, but they were his biggest shots of the season to date.

Moore sank both free throws with 4.2 seconds left as the Indians defeated Class 4A’s 15th-ranked Owls 50-48.

The non-conference win lifted El Reno, ranked No.13 in Class 5A, to 4-3 on the season. It was the Indians second straight win.

“That’s a good way to start off 2020,” said Moore.

The two-week break for the holidays proved to be just what El Reno High School’s girls basketball team needed to heal up and reset its direction for 2020.

“We had a couple of weeks off and it allowed us to touch back on what we did this summer,” said El Reno head coach Jennifer Douglas.

Touching back on summer meant using full-court pressure to speed up the game tempo and that’s just what El Reno did to Elgin last week, forcing the Owls into 33 turnovers en route to a 70-33 win.
