Calumet students excel at speech contest

Body

CACHE — Three Calumet students placed in their respective categories at the American Farmers & Ranchers (AFR) Southwest District Speech Contest held Nov. 17 in Cache.

Alice Park placed first in the Intermediate AFR/OFU category, Rance Nitzel placed third in the Senior Agribusiness category and Bella Dean placed fifth in the Senior Agri-Science category.

This marks the 80th year of the statewide contest. The event has gone through many changes over the years but has always maintained its central agricultural theme.

Okarche October Lion and Lioness honorees are seniors Andrew Walker and Belle Beam.

Underwood OHCE donates to Youth and Family Services blanket project

Janan Fletcher hosted the November meeting of the Underwood Oklahoma Home and Community Education Club. Those attending were Natalia Valenzuela, Vicki Duncan, Ann Ricketts, Renee’ Schweitzer, Bernita Davis and Delpha Miklautsch.

Valenzuela called the meeting to order with the flag salute. Fletcher read a devotional on gratitude and gave the treasurer’s report. 

The lesson was Reduce Spending With DYI Projects. Pictures of craft ideas were handed out. The group decoupaged ceramic tiles with fall napkins.

Jensen, Brothers win El Reno races

Steve Jensen was re-elected El Reno mayor besting challenger Phillip Church 948-647.

In the Ward 2 council race Heather Brothers led the field getting 227 votes. Gary Baker finished with 171. Incumbent Pete Stapperfend finished with 86 votes while Herschel Gorham had 39.

The results are unofficial. 

Owner, city council at odds over condemned property, repair list

Body

Property owner Ed Graham said the city kept adding to the list of improvements that needed to be made to his building at 112 S. Choctaw, but members of the El Reno City Council didn’t see it that way.

In the end, the former tavern was condemned in a unanimous 5-0 vote after city officials pointed out the original June inspection stated it was not a comprehensive list of failures found at the building.
